Marika Kilius’ 75th Birthday (* March 24, 1943)

The „Ice Princess“ is one of the first pop stars in the sports realm of the young German Federal Republic, a teen-idol and a show business darling. The daughter of a milliner was named after the film star Marika Rökk. She picks up roller skating at the age of four, and ice-skating shortly after. At the age of seven she finds her first partner for both disciplines, Franz Ningel, together they go on to win their first medals in pair skating. Kilius becomes a world champion in artistic roller-skating at the age of 15, making her the youngest German champion in history. When she literally outgrows her childhood partner Kilius teams up with Hans-Jürgen Bäumler. After merely a year of training they win their first German championship title. In the following years they become European Champions six times, they become two time World Champions and two time silver medal winners at the Olympic Games. Germany is so smitten with this dream couple on ice that even the nightly news program is delayed when they perform. In 1964 Bäumler und Kilius end their tournament career. They go on to perform in shows like “Holiday on Ice”. They star in ice-skating movies such as “Die große Kür” and “Das große Glück”. Since singing athletes are en vogue the music industry comes calling as well. They record duets as well as solos, producing the hits “Wenn die Cowboys träumen” or “Honeymoon in St. Tropez”. To the chagrin of their fans they never become a couple in their private lives. In 1964 Kilius marries Werner Zahn, the son of a factory owner.
