Barbie is 60! (March 9, 1959)

Barbie is the world’s most famous and best-selling doll. More than 1 billion dolls have been sold since the first Barbie was introduced at the New York Toy Convention on March 9, 1959. Throughout the decades the dress-up doll went through an interesting transformation. When in the early days she only wore Haute Couture, she soon opens up to the taste of the masses and goes with the times fashion-wise. She is joined by many new friends—most of all Ken—relatives, pets, props, such as houses, vehicles and furniture, all of which piece together into an almost seamless Barbie world.

There is never a lack of harsh criticism regarding the gender clichés and unrealistic, sexualized body measurements. Nevertheless, Barbie does have some emancipatory potential. As the first adult age doll she is meant to convey a modern perception of woman, rather than help the child practice her mother role, like most baby dolls did and still do. As early as 1961 Barbie came with a graduation cap, by now she has been an astronaut, president, fire fighter and marine biologist. Today the doll comes in all shapes and skin colours.

Barbie was originally inspired by a German doll. Ruth Handler, creator and co-founder of the Mattel Company had bought the doll during a trip to Europe: the so-called BILD-Lilli*, a comic figure that was created in 1952 for the first circulation of the daily newspaper BILD. The sassy secretary that symbolized the so-called „Fräulein miracle“ became so popular that they made a doll version of her in 1955. After Mattel purchases the marketing rights in 1964 production of Lilli dolls ceases and the Barbie doll hits the German market.

* Due to its uncanny resemblance Bild-Lilli is incorrectly captioned as Barbie in the description of Welt im Bild i.e. Weekly Newsreel reports from 1956 and 1957.
