30th Anniversary of Emperor Hirohito’s Death († January 7, 1989)
He is the longest serving monarch in the history of Japan, at the same time he epitomizes his country’s varied fate throughout the 20th century: Emperor Hirohito, descendent of the sun goddess Amaterasu, worshipped like a god himself. Born in 1901 he is raised at a peer’s school far away from his parents, just like ancient tradition commands. At the age of 19 he becomes the first Japanese crown prince to travel abroad. Upon his return he takes over his ailing father’s official duties. Three years later he marries Princess Nagako, by which time he has abolished the traditional concubinage. Together they have seven children. When he finally ascends to the chrysanthemum throne in 1926 he chooses the name „Shōwa“ („enlightened peace“) as the name and mantra of his regency. However, soon after the land of the rising sun engages in aggressive expansion attempts in the south east Asian territory, which lead to the Pacific war following the annexation of Manchuria (1931) and the invasion of China (1937).
After the devastating atomic bombings in 1945 a Tenno addresses his people for the very first time. Hirohito personally delivers the radio message of Japan’s capitulation. At the prodding of the United States the Japanese commander in chief is not sued as a war criminal, because they deem him essential for political stability. Hirohito abandons his godlike statues, and by signing the new constitution he hands the power of the imperial family to the people. From now on he only takes on representative tasks „as the symbol of the state and the unity of the people“. In this capacity he opens the Olympic games in Tokyo in the summer of 1964 and goes on international trips in an attempt to mend diplomatic relationships. In the course of such a trip he also visits the Federal Republic of Germany in 1971. Following his death on January 7, 1989 his oldest son Akihito is called the new Tenno.
