01. Rio de Janeiro:

Governmental Change in Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, the picturesque capital of Brazil, was recently the scene of an abrupt governmental change. President Getulio Vargas, for more than 16 years virtual dictator, resigned and fled over the border by 'plane.
The army takes over the key points in all larger towns.
The Presidential Palace, too, is guarded, while the preliminary Acting President Linhares is sworn in.
He was soon superseded after the general elections by the former War Minister General Dutra who now guides the fates of Brazil.

02. Germans Evacuate CSR
One million 750 000 have to be transposed now and within the next 7 months from Czecho-Slovakia to Germany.
According to the Potsdam declaration, these evacuation operations are carried out in an organized and humane way.
In Germany's 4 Occupation-Zones extensive preparations have been made to accomodate these evacuees.

03. Marseille:

Cycle-Steeplechase
A cycling contest near Marseille is partly arace and partly a mountaineering trip.
The slippery streets cause plenty of spills and entanglements.
Steep slopes must be climbed with shouldered bycicles.
The last lap has to be rounded three times. Here is the winner - he obviously drove through thick and thin.

04. Amerika:

Underwater repast
Now, this is something for gourmands: With a double-flip from the springboard down to the breakfast-table were it depends more on a good lung than on a good stomach.
First come, first served.
Drinks are less in demand, but that does not make the table-conversation less fluid.
One adjourns in good order.
The rest is for the cat ... pardon me ... for the fish, of course.

05. Lauenburg:

20 Million Matches A Day
There is still a great shortage of matches - but this factory in Lauenburg already achieves a daily output of 400000 boxes, which is about 50 percent of its pre-war production.
The life story of a match begins with sawing the wood into thin bands. A special machine cuts the bands in small sticks, which are cleaned, cut and bundled.
No giant-brush, but the matches ready in position to be dipped into the flammable liquid.
Filling the matches into the boxes, which are closed automatically.
The ignition patches are affixed.
10 boxes make a parcel. The factory at present employs 230 workers achieving an output of 20 Million matches a day.

06. Vienna:

For St. Stephens Cathedral
During the battle in Vienna the St. Stephen's Cathedral, the land-mark of the city, was fired by SS-troops.
For the cathedral's rebuilding the Viennese boys choir sing the "Ave verum" by Mozart in the chapel of the Hofburg.

07. USA:

Target Plane Controlled By Radio
These miniature planes are the latest targets for the U.S. Air Force.
They take the air at an army air-field from a catapult launching ramp. A radio device permits the plane's control exactly as a pilot would to.
Air gunners pour bullets at the plane. When hit, a thiny parachute is released by radio, and the plane is geutly floated to earth. When repaired, this target will fly again.

08. Berlin News
In Berlins Tiergarten a monument in honour of the heroes of the Red Army is inaugurated. The Ceremony is attended by Marshall Shukov and the Generals of all units stationed in Berlin. A parade of the Allied Troops ends the ceremony.
The streets of the heavily damaged city are slowly being cleared of rubbish and ruins. All undestroyed theatres and movies give performances. A well known entertainment and excursion centre again canvasses for customers on the streets.
The fuel allotacion is very short, g[...] not yet available and the wood gathered from the ruins and collected in the Grunewald scarcely soffices for cooking.
A hard winter for the men of Berlin ... and even more so for Berlin's women.

09. News events from Japan
[...] Japanese home waters battleships, cruisers and carriers rot and rust destroyed by bombs and torpedoes - the Japanese fleet does not exist any longer.
By order of General Mac Arthur all [...] on the land are destroyed, too. Phosphor shells blow up the tanks, which once attacked peaceful countries.
On Omori, an island in Tokio-Bay, high ranking officers wait for their trial, Primeminister Tojo aming them. Fully recovered from his recent suicide attempt he will now have to give account for the attack on Pearl Harbour and innumerable acts of cruelty by the Japanese Army.
His fellow-prisoners shun him. Tojo has to lunch alone. Gradually the treasures are recovered, too, which were hidden before the surrender. U.S. soldiers uncover a trap door over an underground room filled with ingots of Silver. Treasures worth Millions have already been seized.

10. German PW's in U.S.A

Retraining Before Coming Home
In the United States several thousands of German prisoners of war attend special classes to fit them for administrative work in the German Government.
Following General Eisenhower's suggestion courses in languages, finance and public safety are part of these courses.
Participation in these schools is voluntary but only prisoners with a cleam political record are accepted.
After a final examination they receive a diploma. Returning to Germany they will help in rebuilding their nation along democratic lines

11. London:

Nazi trophies under the hammer
By order of the British Government the effects of the former German Embassy in London are sold by auction. The proceeds go towards the Reparation Account.
The attendance was surprisingly large. Collectors and souvenir hunters outbid each other for the furniture, china, paintings and chandeliers of Ribbentrop's sumptuous household.
A paper-shredding machine which scientifically tears up papers and documents.
This is Ribbentrop's dress sword.
Sensation of the auction was the appearance of four Swastika-flags, to be raised after Hitler's victorious entry into the British capital. The numerous peepshow proprietors were keen bidders for them.
Finally the most representative piece in Ribbentrop's realm a granite bust of Hitler ... now lot 597.

01. New York:

Dangerous Handicraft
One of the high spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York is boxed in the very top with scaffoldings. The masonry is being repaired, The News Reel Camera catches some unusnal scenes as the work begins.
The stone-workers are on the job - 350 feet above the traffic below. They have to have a sure footing and strong nerves, in this high position.

02. Airdrome one the ocean
This new British invention makes possible the take-off and landing of planes on any spot of the ocean, even at high tide.
Rockets are fastened to the machines, as the take-off space is too limited for a normal start.
The take-off - the rockets give the plane a high speed, enabling it to rise smoothly an safely from the magic wave-carpet.

03. Bavaria:

The end of an ammunition factory
Lt. General Truscott, Commander of the 3rd U.S. Army, sets off the detonating charge for the blasting of the Powder Plant Kaufbeuren. This plant belonged to the J.C. Farben Concern and was the first to be blown up in accordance with recently drawn up plans for the demolition of German war factories.

04. Japan:

Hirohito reports to his ancestors
[...] Emperor Hirohito visits the tomb of his father, following Japanese custom he reports to his ancestors. In December 1941 he stood here to pray for victory - now he comes to confess defeat.
In the shadow of the sacred Mount Fujijama lies the tomb that never before was filmed. the report is transmitted to the father by the priests, the report, which admits that, for the first times in her 2600 years old history, a Victorious opponent occupies the soil of Japan.

05. Holland:

The Red Devils of Arnheim
Red Devils is the name of the British airborne men who fought near Arnheim. Some of them come to re-visit the old battle-ground.
In these houses they were once entrenched. This is where they landed after jumping out of their plane.
And these are Dutch friends they made at that time, among them a woman, who nursed the wounded British soldiers during the attack.
The Red Devils have a mutually tonching re-union with their good friends of the tough fighting days of the epic-battle of Arnheim.

06. North-Africa:

State visit in the desert
The French Governor General of Algiers, M. Chataigneau, inspects the North-African Province Fessan.
His trip takes him through picturesque little towns and oasis of the province, and native troops honour him with parades and pageants.

07. Mules for Greece
These mules of the British Jtalian Army wre no longer needed for military work after the end of the war.
Now they are brought to Greece, where they are badly needed for transportation purposes.
The loading in the harbour of Bari. the unloading in a Creek port.
The mules take the trip in their stride ... another little air-tide - and they arrive safely at their new home.
These hardy animals are the sole reliable means of transportation in the rugged mountains of Greece.

08. Finland:

Sibelius 80 Years Old
Jan Sibelius, one of the most famous composers in our time celebrates his 80th birthday in his home in Finland.

09. French Sport News
In Paris French, and Swiss fencing champions meet for a match. The French foil champion of the world, Pecheux, faces the lefthand Swiss Zapelli.
The hits are accurately recorded by an electrical control device. A bulb flashes with each strike. The cables do not hinder the fighters at all. France finally wins with 5 : 1 points.
Paris also has some interesting boxing matches. This fight lasts more than 10 rounds and Danthille (in white shorts) just manages to win on points against Joe Brun.
Marcel Cerdan, at present the best and most popular prize-fighter of France, boxes against Buttin, who is no match for Cerdan. The champion lands and hits as he pleases - and the ropes more than once prevent the opponent from being thrown out.
Knock-out? - the referee counts ... no, he comes back for more - another smashing hit - and the final K.O. in the 3rd round. Cerdan can book another victory in his record series.

10. Germany:

Two New Important Bridges
Without bridges - no traffic, without traffic - no reconstruction.
This is the Rhine Bridge near Mainz, destroyed by the German troops.
Working day and night American Engineers have errected a new river-crossing that will mainly carry the railroad traffic to France.
The damaged Autobahn Bridge crossing the Teltow-Kanal near Berlin, too, has been reconstructed by American Engineers.
This bridge is one of the most important thoroughfares leading to the British and American Zones of Berlin.
General Barker, Commanding General of the British Zone in Berlin, inaugurates the bridge for traffic.

11. Art of fashion thaught in University
Los Angeles University is the first to introduce lectures and practical exercises for fashion designing into the student's curriculum.
As a fitting prelude to this new branche of "science", a fashion parade is shown to the girl undergraduates acquainting them whith the unique creations of top-notch fashion designers.

12. Red Army Leaving Prague
The Red Army leaves Czechoslovakia. These pictures demonstrate the hearty and friendly farewell of the Prague population from the Sowjet soldiers.

13. Tokio:

Merry Riding and Falling Tournament
In Tokio Stadium U.S. soldiers put on a colourful show.
The highlight: a ride on Emperor Hirohito's famous white horse.
This is only for super-horsemen!
Hullo! ... The next one even rides on a bull. Winner: the bull.
And now a "double-event". Scored!
