Progress and pace of the recovery depends on the performance of each individual mine today. 01. Industrial Reconstruction
Coal is the power-source of reconstruction, basic element of private and public economy.
To-day, the output of each single mine determines success and speed of the program of recovery.
In the Fortuna-pit near Cologne the dr[...]ing machines haul brown coal directly from a depth of 80 meters.
Conveyor-belts transport it to the briquette factory, where the coal is crushed and pressed.
The machine emits the briquettes and belts carry them to the waiting trucks.
Part of the output is branched off for war-reparations, everything else goes to German industrie and households.
The Leitz-works in Wetzlar have resumed production of the famous Leica-cameras, microscopes and other scientific and medical instruments. Doctors, Universities and hospitals are the first to obtain these [...]oods.
The plant already amploys 3.000 workers. This is the Leica-departmant.
One day's output of Leicas proves the regained capacity of the works, an important factor für Germany's export and foreign trade.

02. News flashes from Germany:

a. Rest Home For Disabled Soldiers
The former old-age home at Starnberg Lake has been converted into a rest home for disabled soldiers. Here they receive for several weeks hospitality, rest and medical treatment.
The days are filled out with sport, games and other recreation.
The bell calls them to dinner.
The Administration of the Munich catering establishments is in charge of the administration of the rest centre.

b. Musical boxes
The Municipal Collection of musical instruments - which was evacuated during the war to Oberpfalz comes back to Munich.
The collection contains about 3.000 instruments of all countries and periods. For the time they have a provisional home, later the former villa of Martin Borman in Munich will house the whole collection.
This is a Claviciterium, a predecessor of the piano, 16th century.
Musical boxes of all kinds and sizes are to [...] here, too.
This is the most elaborate one ...
And this is the world's smallest musical box, 17th century. 1 and 1/2 inches high - made of ducat-gold and weighing only about one and a half ounces.

c. The childrens ship, Hamburg
During the summer months, the children from the worst damages parts of Hamburg are taken by steamer to the beautiful green countryside out of town.
The childrens ship is an institution of the Hamburg School athorities. Every day, 6 to 700 kids enjoy the opportunity to leave the ruins of the city behind them and recoperate in fresh air and sun.
The teachers accompany their pupils.
The openair picnic is a welcome finish to this school outing 1946.

d. Female registrar
Another new profession available for women is now that of a registrar and in Berlin-Reinickendorf Miss Dora Brunzlow already administers the office of a marriage registry.
Formerly Berlin's first female registrar was employed in a solicitor's office. Later she took a "course of instruction for applicants for registrar's offices" and thus gained the technical and psychological experience necessary for dealings with knowledge and judgement of men for the about-to-be-newly wed.

03. News flashes from America:

a. Aircraft Carrier Midway
The American carrier "Midway" has been transferred to Polar exploration. Cruising in the Arctic she now tests men and machines under Polar conditions.
The planes are covered against the cold. Masked against the bitter weather the men experiment with protection for equipment in the sudden blizzards of the far north. The new Arctic fashions make their wearers look like phantastic Mars-people. But they prooved themselves to be the best and most reliable protection against severe frost.
Before the take-off the motors are heated with warm air and a mechanical brush sweeps clear the flight deck.
Ready for the take-off - the propellors are turned over - and with the aid of catapult equipment plane after plane takes off for a flight over the arctic ice cap. These tests resulted in valuable scientific and practical experiences concerning living conditions and communications in the arctic zone.

b. Sheep
Thousands of tons of water per second pour over the Grand Coulee Dam in the State of Washington, one of the most magnificent technical structures in America. The melting of this years unusually heavy mountain snows increased the volume of the flood which the dam has to control.
The Grand Coulee Dam also serves as bridge and street. A great flock of 3.000 sheep are on their way to cross Columbia River to better summer grazing lands

c. Refugees
Into New York harbour sails a ship with over eight hundred victims of Nazi persecution. Many of them spent long terrible years in the horror camps of Aushwitz, Dachau and Theresienstadt.
Past the Statue of Liberty they sail towards a happier future.
In notorious Aushwitz Camp, these girls' arms were indelibly tatooed with prison numbers.
75 of the arriving children are orphans. Many of them are without any records of their homes - or even their nationalities.
Relatives and friends wait to meet the newcomers and they get a welcome they will never forget.

d. Circular Dwelling-house
The housing shortage in America leads to all kinds of experiments. In the State of Kansas this circular dwelling was built of lightweight metals and plastic.
Its inventor points to the following advantages: the round house needs no foundations, the revolving roof can be used for mechanical ventilation and - there are no arkward corners to bump into.
Space is utilised to the utmost. The interior, too, reveals some novel practical ideas: rotating wardrobes ... linen drawers on the conveyor belt system.
A round house may seem strange but, in a housing shortage, people are giving attention to all new ideas.

e. Roxas elected President of Philippines
Thoughout the Philippines a presidential election is held. The election campaign for the two candidates Osmena and Roxas was marked by high popular interest and wide electioneering.
[...] who himself voted in Manila, was elected president with a clear majority.
He will lead the Philippines to complete independence in July of this year.
Soon after his election Roxas travels to America for an official visit and a friendly personal discussion with President Truman.

04. Bee-medicine
Europe's largest bee-keeping establishment in Illertissen (Swabia) shelters more than 1000 swarms. Besides honey and wax, a valuable remedy for sciatica, gout and rheumatism is produced here from the poisonous sting of the bee.
As the bee loses its life together with its sting only the oldest and weakest are taken for that purpose.
With the aid of tweezers the little animal is pressed against a soft paper in which the sting remains.
Approximately 10 stings are necessary to fill one tube of the medicine.
Now, the bee-poison is dissolved, concentrated and filled in vials.
Part of the preparation is made into ointments.
Thus more and more people are healed ... with the aid of science and ... the bees.

05. England

The Derby
Since 163 years the Derby is Englands classic sporting event ... and on the day of the Derby the eyes of the world look toward the historical track on Epsom Downs.
It is a national rally, a holiday, a mass-excursion ... all rolled in one.
Inspite of the rain 250.000 spectators crowd the stands.
For the newsreel a 120 foot high tower was erected so as to cover the race in all its phases.
The King and Queen, Queen-mother Mary and Princess Elizabeth drive along the course and then mount the royal stand.
The Derby begins with a parade of the 17. competing horses and jockeys.
This is the outsider "Airborne" whose number 13 did not prove so unlucky.
Shortly before the take-off the sun comes out of the clouds.
The Derby of 1946 is under way.
One and a half mile have to be covered - enough for lots of thrilling moments and surprises.
The middle field gains - but the lead never changes.
Suddenly the grey horse No. 13, "Airborne", darts forward - passes the whole field - and takes the lead.
The outsider beats all the favourites and wins by a length!
This is only the fourth time in 163 years that a grey horse wins the Derby.
No. 13 pays 50 : 1 ... in the Derby of 1946.
