75th Anniversary of the USA’s First Atomic Detonation on Bikini Atoll (June 30, 1946)
Operation Crossroads is a series of nuclear weapons tests in Bikini Atoll that begin in the summer of 1946. On June 30 at 10 p.m. (universal time, +12 hours local time), a bomb dropped from an airplane is detonated at an altitude of 160 meters under the code name Able. On July 24 a second nuclear weapon, Baker, is detonated 27 meters underwater. A third test planned for March 1947 is cancelled.
The aim of the tests is to investigate the effects of a nuclear explosion and the concomitant radiation and pressure effects on a fleet, as well as other military equipment and apparatus. For this purpose more than 200 decommissioned ships, some of which were captured during the war, are towed to the target area.
Able and Baker are the first nuclear weapons tests to take place in full view of the global public. Over 100 reporters are on site, as well as scientific and military observers from all over the world. The experiments are documented at great expense, with a total of over 700 cameras and more than 500 photographers and film people in action.
The decisive factor for the choice of the test area was that it was far away from all shipping and air traffic routes. The inhabitants of the island agreed to a resettlement, in the assumption that they would help to secure peace, but also that they would soon be able to return to their homeland. They continue to live in exile to this day. Following Operation Crossroads 21 additional atomic bomb tests were carried out on the atoll until 1958. The destruction and radioactive contamination caused by them - and in particular by a miscalculated hydrogen bomb test in 1954 - can still be seen and felt today.
Incidentally, French fashion designer Louis Réard takes the atomic bomb tests in the Pacific as an opportunity to name the two-piece swimwear he has just created - "la première bombe anatomique" – „bikini.“
