03. News of reconstruction:
a. Blast furnace, Berlin
Everywhere in Berlin scrap-iron is salvaged from the debris - and thousands of tons are still in the ruins. Now this scrap is being utilized.
A blast furnace was built in the heavily bombed plant Bothe iron works. Though it cannot compare with those in the Rhine area it produces 200 tons of pig iron a month.
After the melting down the liquid crude iron is directed into channels where it solidifies into ingots.
A second furnace is being built. Thus, Berlin creates for itself a part compensation for the iron from Rhine and Ruhr.
b. New soil, Holstein
A different form of reconstruction is practiced in Holstein. Through hard and intensive work the Putlos manoeuvre ground have been converted into fertile arable land.
Where formerly youngsters were prepared for the battlefield crops are now growing. The soil, once torn by shells, is now furrowed by the plough.
The area was distributed among settlers and farmers. Farms sprang out of the barren land. One of these new farms harvested already this year 5.000 cwt of crop, 3.000 cwt of potatoes and 15.000 cwt of beets and vegetables.
This soil which only a year ago resembled a moon landscape today already feeds six persons per hectar.
c. Railway reconstruction, Holstein and Munich
One of reconstruction's most important aids is a smoothly functioning transportation and traffic system. Everywhere tracks are being cleared a wreckage removed to create space for new yards and workshops.
These repair works are being carried out at the Neumünster marshalling yards in Holstein. Everything that can be salvaged is preserved. This 80 ton-locomotive for instance can be repaired and used again.
Thousands of other locomotives, both electric and steam driven, are in the workshops.
Bavaria biggest plant of this type is the Kraus-Maffei-Works at Munich-Allach.
Instead of fabrication the plant concentrates at present on the reconditioning of repairable locomotives.
The damaged engines are taken apart. The various parts are repaired in specialized workshops.
After overhauling of all parts the engine is reassembled in the assembling shop.
Up to now 250 locomotives were repaired in these workshops - newly conditioned for long service on the trackways.
04. Athens:
King of Greece returns
The majority of the Greek population voted in a plebiscite for the reconstruction of the monarchy. After a five year exile in England King George II. returns to Greece.
He is accompanied by Crown Princess Friderika and Crown Prince Paul. On his attival at Athens the monarch is welcomed by representatives of the Greek government and the army. Thousands cheer the King on his way to the cathedral.
On the steps King George salutes the Princesses Helena and Alicia.
