01. The Cold-catastrophe, Hamburg
The most important event of the last week in Germany was: the cold.
The bitterest frost in years, with temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius - stopping work and construction, paralysing business and traffic, endangering life and health. Electricity- and fuel-shortages intensified the serious situation.
These pictures show Hamburg at the climax of the city period. There was much frost-bite, and death by freezing.
The ground of the Ohlsdorf Cemetary was frozen to a depth of one meter. New graves had to be[...]lown open. The important water ways were kept open by ice-breakers. The channel between the North-Sea and the Baltic is necessary for shipping and freight vessels.
The ice-breaker consumes 20 centners of co[...]l per hour, but its work is imperative for life itself. Meanwhile they relieved the severest cold period of this year and liberated ice bound town and country.

a. Chiang Kai Shek, China
Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek has convened China's first National Convention in Nanking. 1.500 delegates honour the Father of the Chinese Revolution - Sun Yat Sen - at his tomb.
The delegates enter the Government Building. Representatives of many races attend the meeting. The National Convention has the task of making a new constitution, and besindes that, peace and unity among 450 millions of Chinese.

b. A cardinal visits a Movie Studio, England
For the first time a British Cardinal visits a movie-studio ... The Pinewood-Studio in London.
Cardinal Griffin, Arch-Bishop of Westminster, is welcomed by the two film-stars: Kathleen Ryan and Stewart Granger.

c. An American plane's crash-landing

Especially horrible was the cross-examination of the witness Walter Neff, who was first an inmate, later a nurse, in the Dachau Camp. Neff described the cold water experiments, and the experiments with poison and sea-water which were held at Dachau and caused many deaths among the human Guinea-pigs. In his situation as nurse he also attended the so-called "Invalid-Tooth-action", of which he said:

04. Highlights from Germany:

a. The Temples of Honour, Munich
The so-called "Temples of Honour" in the Königsplatz, Munich, have been blown up. The Nazis had erected these buildings in 1935 by Hitler's order as a centre of worship für their Party - in remembrance of the abortive pute of November 9. 1923. The pillars were pierced and 90 explosive fuses placed.
A horn-signal warns that the blowing-up begins. When the second temple is destroyed, the former architectural plan of the Königsplatz will be restored.

The dial-plate is made of fine wood, the clocks work by weights; 2 sizes are manufactured - for home and office. Here the throbs of the finshed clocks hearts are checked, with head-receiver and stethoscope.
The first post-war out-put of clocks, which is going to be sold first to bombed-out people and refugees.

c. Children's Home
The British Governor of Schleswig-Holstein, de Crespigny, has put one part of his house in [...] Altenhof near Kiel, at the disposal of a home for German refugee-children.
Several rooms were furnished as play-room, dining-room and bed-rooms for the kids. About 30 children, aged 3 to 6 years, are guests for 8 weeks each in this home, which is [...]under German administration. The Governor's wife. Mrs. de Crespigny, has a special interest in this relief-establishment.

05. Washington:

Final session of UNRRA
UNRRA, the United Nations Relief and Reconstruction Administration, ended its activities during the first month of this year.
La Guardia, former General Director of UNRRA, made his finishing report to UNRRA-representatives of 48 nations. Since its establishment, UNRRA delivered almost 20 million tons of goods costing more than 3 1/2 billions of dollars to the suffering people of the world. At the same time La Guardia resigned from his office as Director of UNRRA.
His successor is the American General Rooks. He has to control the closing operations, which will last in Europe until the end of March for Asia until the end of June 1947. The displaced persons, of whom 660.000 are in Germany, will be taken care of in future by the international refugee organisation.

06. Housing problem in the Ruhr-District
Minister of State Hynd, Director of the British Control Office for Germany and Austria, has examined the housing problem on the occasion of a visit to the Ruhr-District. In the vicinity of Dortmund Minister Hynd Saw the building of new homes for miner's families.

The corrugated metal walls are insulated with glass wool. Each Nissen-hut can house tow families.

07. Racing Again In Tokio:

The Japanes Derby
Normal life comes gradually back to Tokio ... and the horse-race as well.
The first post-war Derby was attended by 50.000 spectators. "Shall I bet on Lotos-Bloom?"
Soon the Far East Derby will start. And there they go, with favourite "Silver-stripe" taking the lead. The American soldiers of the Occupation treeps, too, are stricken with racing lever.
