Emil Nolde’s 150th Anniversary (August 7, 1867)

Emil Nolde is considered one of the most important expressionist painters. He is known for the intensive and high-contrast coloring of his watercolors and paintings. His flower and landscape paintings are still very popular today and achieve record prices at international art auctions.

However, the range of his oeuvre extends far beyond these works. The skilled draftsman and wood-carver doesn’t just work with oils and watercolor, he also creates numerous drawings, etchings and woodcarvings. His lesser known motives capture the wild Berlin nightlife, the exoticism of the South Pacific, mythical creatures and grotesques, biblical scenes and images.

Despite his artistic recognition Nolde’s relationship with National Socialism remains ambivalent. In 1934 he becomes a member of the National Socialist Worker Association Northern Schleswig. He professes allegiance to the Third Reich and makes a number of anti-Semitic comments. Yet in 1937, 1,000 of his works are confiscated from various German museums, about 50 of these are included in the exhibit „Degenerate Art“ for public ridicule. In 1941 he gets excluded from the Reich Chamber of Culture and is barred from his profession. He secretly begins painting small watercolors calling them his „unpainted pictures.“ Nolde receives numerous awards and honors after the war. His sympathies for the Nazi regime remain concealed—by himself but even after his death in 1965. His image as a victim of the Nazi regime has been rectified only recently.

A number of exhibits show the artist’s substantial and eclectic oeuvre to commemorate his 150th anniversary.
