1st change in the American high command in Frankfurt am Main, Germany handed over command of American forces in Europe and the function of the military Governor of the U.S. zone in Germany on his former Deputy, General Clay General McNarney.
Changing the official Office, which took place in the presence of all the American occupation army generals and representatives of Allied military missions, General McNarney spoke of the tasks fulfilled so far in Germany.
He said it: "Help the Germans, where you can, because they need your help!"
Germany need a far-reaching political, economic and social welfare in its reconstruction, and General Clay was called like no other to do this task.
General McNarney was awarded a high order affiliated his successor in appreciation of his military and political contributions. General Clay stated in his words of thanks that he will follow the policy proposed by General McNarney further... The military Government would remain in Germany until the big goal was achieved: peace.

04. Cape Town: The King of England opened the Parliament in Cape Town Parliament of the Union of South Africa to a solemn session was convened, to greet the King and the Queen of England.
Thousands gathered on the driveway road, when seeking the high score by a cordon of troops to the State opening of Parliament.
The ceremony takes place just like in the English motherland.
Also the Princesses are among those present.
After a short speech in English and the national language, the King opened the Parliament.
So far, the Parliament of a Dominion was always opened by the Deputy of the King. The personal appearance of King George VI. before the Parliament in Cape Town was therefore a significant event in the. History of the British Empire.

01. Change in American Command

In his speech General Clay declared that he would follow the policies laid down by General McNarney. Military Government would stay in Germany until its goal was reached: A secure peace.

02. Three-Zone Agreement:

At the Three-Zones-Corner near Kassel the American, British and Russian Zone meet. Here in a transient camp released POW.s are cared for day and night.
Homecomers from Russia who want to go into the British Zone. A long-awaited pleasure.
And here homecomers from British prison camps.
From their camp they are brought by bus to the Russian Zone.
The homecomers have passed the last station - now they go home ...

03. Actualities in brief

a. Stassen
On his trip through Europe one of the Republican candidates for the Presidency of the U.S.A., Harold Stassen, arrived in the Ruhr-district. Governor Stassen Inspects the life and economy of the countries stricken by war. After a visit to the Krupp plant Stassen met General Gilman and officers of the British M.G. at the Villa Huegel.
He showed special interest in the coupon-system for miners, the welfare organisations and production in the Ruhr area. Harold Stassen's journey for information was undertaken as a private citizen. He is going to participate in the Moskow conference as an unofficial observer.

b. Youth Parliament
At Fuerstenfeldbruck near Munich the American M.G. arranged an experiment to educate the younger generation after American methods. The winners of a writing competition on the subject: "The importance of Democracy in Germany" assembled in the City Hall.
For ane day they were allowed to take over public office in their rural district.

Accompanied by the directors of the several offices the youngsters took over.
17-year-old Bernhard Megele, who wrote the best essay, at the desk of the Military Governor.
Miss "School Inspector" inspects the first class of the boy's school. The little "Burgomaster" puts on the burgomaster's chain and gets a survey of the joys and sorrows of a busy chief of a parish council.
An interesting day is over and the young notables go back to their every-day life, full of news and valuable impressions.

c. The President of Chile
In Santiago-de-Chile the house of the President is open once a week to everyone.
Since Gabriel Gonzales Videla became head of the state every citizen has been given the right to see the President personally, and to talk to him.
The visitors come from all classes and bring their personal wishes, sorrows and complaints. With absolute freedom they criticise the governmental establishments and suggest means of improvement.
By this means the President and his collegues have direct contact with the people. His public office-hours are an exemplary democratic arrangement which has gained great popularity.

04. Cape-Town:

The King of England opens Parliament
In Cape-Town the Parliament of the S.A. Union assembled in order to honour the King and Queen of England.
Thousands lined the streets when the royal guests passed through the guard of honour to go to the opening. The ceremonies are held in the same way as in England.
The Princesses participate, too.
After a short address in English and Afrikaan the King opens Parliament.
Hitherto the Parliament of South Africa was always opened by the representative of the King.
The personal appeareance of King Georg VI. at the Cape Town Parliament was therefore an important event in the history of the Empire.

05. Sports:

a. Ping Pong
Munich was the scene of a Ping-Pong Tournament in which foreign champions participated.
Here the German champion Mauritz (dark shirt) playing against the Polish champion Bukief.
After an interesting game Bukief won by 3 : 2.
In the doubles Mauritz and Than of Munich played against Bukief.
Mauritz and Than won 3 : 2.

b. Boxing
In the Berlin Palace of Variety the German Middleweight Champion Dietrich Hucks, Homberg, met Adolf Witt of Kiel for the second time.
Hucks, who hitherto knocked out all his challengers, from the start tried for a k.o. - but Witt remembers his last k.o. and keeps Hucks at arm's length.
The first four rounds are even - no former opponent of Hucks has ever reached the fifth round.
Among the spectators: Heinz Rühmann and Hertha Feiler.
Witt also survives the fifth round. But in the 6th he goes down. The referee counts, but at eight Witt gets up and goes on fighting.
In the seventh round Witt goes down twice. But suddenly Hucks is down. 3.000 sports-fans expect a sensation ... but Hucks is just resting.
The eighth and last round was even. One of the most dramatic fights in the German boxing ring ended as a draw.
Witt broke the winning record of the "White Bomber" - - who has always beaten his opponents.

b. Bob-Sladding
This is the Bob-sled track at Lake Placid in the State of N.Y., where in 1932 the winter Olympic Games were held. The best bob-sled racers in America are here.
The track is one mile long - a little more than 1 and a-half Kilometers.
The competitors reach speeds of 90 Kilometers PH on the curving runway.
Crash-landing!
That looked bad, but there were little injuries.
The winner drove the whole course in one minute, that is almost 100 KPH.

06. One Hundred Years Ago:

Edison's Birthday
The hundredth birthday of Thomas Alva Edison was the occasion of a memorial meeting at his house in West Orange, New Jersey, in which the widow of the great inventor participated.
After his death Edison's work room was left untouched. The clock over the fireplace stopped at the moment of his death.
Since that time the desk was put under seal and is now opened by his son, Charles Edison. Against all expectations, no scientific data was found. One of the last photographs of Edison, taken in 1931, some months before his death.
Edison gave to the world more than a thousand inventions, many of them of pioneering importance. He constructed the first Dynamo, invented in 1877 the Cylinder-Phonograph, the predecessor of the grammophone, and had a decisive part in the development of the sound-film.
One of his greatest inventions was the carbon bulb.
Thomas Edison's life work created many new industries.

07. The Ice Chains Broken ...
