03. News Flashes from Germany:

a. St. Paul's Church
St. Paul's Church in Frankfurt, the scene of the first National Assembly in the year 1848, was almost completely mined during the war. The town of Frankfurt will reconstruct the church by the 100th anniversary in 1948.

The model is photographed by a huge camera.
After the plate is developed - a copy of the map is printed. Last corrections are made, and comparison with old maps demonstrate the superiority of the new plastic maps.
By order of the Military Government, atlases and scientific maps for schools and other purposes will be made by the new method.

c. "Harz Canaries."
What is in the parcels which are so carefully carried through the streets of Goslar?
The parcels contain precious canaries which are bred in the Harz Mountains, the world-famous "Harz Rollers."

After the severe winter Europe is suffering from spring floods everywhere.
The rivers Rhine, Elbe, Oder, and Weser have reached new high-water records.
In Bremen the floods destroyed all three bridges. Here the Truman-Bridge and the remains of the railroad bridge. Traffic is at full stop, and rafts and little boats have to be used. In all districts the damage caused is considerable; there has also been loss of life.
The waterlevels of most of the German rivers had gone down again.
England, too, was overrun by great foods. Agriculture has had great losses. In many districts the seed was destroyed, more than 3 million sheep, cattle, and small animals were killed in the floods. Whole towns were cut off, wide districts isolated. This was the greatest catastrophe from flood which has ever befallen England.

a. President Auriol
French President Auriol visits Toulouse in Southern France, Auriol, who himself is a Southerner, is heartily welcomed by the people.

d. Veit Stoss Altar
The high altar of St. Mary's Church in Krakow was discovered after the end of the war in a cellar of Wawel Castle. German troops had re[...]oved it from the church.
The world-famous creation of the Nuremberg master Veit Stoss, who lived for a long time in Krakow, had suffered considerable damage by transport and storing. Artists are busily engaged in the restoration of this most important work of 15th century Gothic wood-carving. After its repair the altar is going to be replaced in St. Mary's, where it stood for centuries.

06. More Insulin
Insulin, the only remedy for diabetes, is again manufactured in Germany in increasing quanttity. These shot[...] are taken at the Bielefeld plant. The basic component, the pancreatic gland of slaughtered animals, is sent in anfrozen state[...] to the factory. The process of manufacture takes several days.
The last process is the [...]entrifugal operation. In the laboratory the plain Insulin is checked by inoculation of test-animals. Then the remedy is packed.
Insulin was discovered in 1922 by the Canadian Docotors Banting and Best.
Up to that time an active treatment of diabetis was impossible. The remedy is at the disposal of the sick without restriction by patents.
Insulin brings the sick decisive help and keeps them at normal working capacity.

07. Sea-lions in danger
Spring brings storms over the Pacific Ocean. Waves as high as houses burst against the steep shores of the North American state of Oregon.
Not only ships have to fight the wave[...], but the animals of the sea also bow to the power of the storm.
These unique pictures show a herd of sea-lions which tried to escape to the shelter of the coast. The camera crew took these pictures at the risk of their lives.
Sea-lions' "S.O.S.".
This storm, lasting for days on end, has driven these skilled divers and swimmers of the ocean ashore. Many of them were killed on the rocky cliffs.
