I.G.-Farben Trial Indictment (May 3, 1947)

On May 3, 1947, an American military court opened its trial against 24 directors of IG Farben Industries. It was the sixth of twelve subsequent trials against members of the leadership of Nazi Germany called the Nuremberg Trials.

The main charges of the so-called IG Farben trial were the planning, preparation, initiation and waging wars of aggression, the systematic plundering and exploitation of occupied and annexed countries, the participation in the "slave labor program" and the inhumane treatment of civilian workers and prisoners of war. Another subject of the trial was the production of Zyklon B and its delivery to the SS so it could be used as an extermination agent in the concentration camps.

After 152 days in court ,13 of the defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 1.5 to 8 years, on the grounds of plundering and enslavement; the remaining defendants were acquitted. All sentenced criminals were released early from prison. Most of the indicted individuals quickly found posts on the board of directors of companies such as BASF, Bayer or Höchst, some of them were even honored with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Despite the controversial and mild sentences the trial had an important educational function in the German public, as the reports by hundreds of witnesses were truly shocking. There were additional trials against companies such as Flick and Krupp.
