05. news from Germany: a. farewell General Clay General clay, the American military Governor of Germany, took leave of the leading German agencies in Frankfurt. The representatives of the Economic Council, Board of Directors and National Council thanked the Governor for his significant work on the reconstruction of Germany.

General Clay said in his farewell speech: a new stage in the development of Germany will start his retirement: the step to self government and the direct cooperation with other peoples.

c. Constitution, the Parliamentary Council in Bonn Bonn has adopted the basic law created in 8 months for the new "Federal Republic of Germany". With 53 votes against 12 votes, members adopted the Constitution. Many domestic and foreign press representatives witnessed this historic process. After the approval by the Western military governors, the basic law must be ratified by the parliaments of the 11 Western German States. Until then, it can enter into force. Bonn was chosen as provisional capital city. With 49 against 1 voice, Schwarz-rot-gold was determined as the national flag. The Blockade is Lifted
May 11th 1949 - - 3 minutes before midnight at the British-Soviet Zone border. Everything is set for the moment at which the blockade will be lifted. The blockade is ended - - car after car drives along the road which was dead for 10 months. The same picture in Berlin before midnight: 2400 hours, and the ring around the blockaded city is opened. The first long distance truck convoy arrives in Berlin -- the driver receives a wreath from "Welt in Film". The street barriers, which were built up by the East Zone Police, are taken away. At Schöneberg City Hall a special session was held by the members of the city council, joined by the Western Military Governors, Professor Reuter, Burgomaster of Berlin said:
"To-night on the occasion of treaties between the 4 occupational forces the so-called technical traffic restrictions have been lifted. There are no more checkpoints in the city."
Then American Military Governor General Clay spoke, saying good-bye to Berlin:
"I shall not use the English word "Good-bye" -- but rather try to say to you, "Auf Wiedersehn."
Music for the first train from Cologne at Helmstedt Station. Happy faces everywhere. The trains roll again - - freight and people pour into Berlin -- and coming from Berlin trains go to the West again. A festival for all who were present during the first hours of the lifting of the blockade.
The Interzonal Buses travel again. The old (forgotten for 10 months) walk over the border. Control of documents. The checkpoint functions again. Not everybody drives over the border. Many walk on the free roads again. An important event: the first coal train arrives in Berlin. There is still an idyllic solitude on the rivers, but only for a few days. A last trip on land ... On the eve of the 12th of May at Schöneberg City Hall a demonstration was held by over 100.000 Berliners. Among the speakers, the President of the Parliamentary Council, Dr. Adenauer:
"Berlins, friends, The Parliamentary Council at Bonn are here on an invitation from Berlin. We are filled with deep thankfulness for your fight, for your suffering, for your patience which helped you to victory."
Luise Schröder, who was Burogmaster at the beginning of the blockade:
"My dear friends! You just heard so many nice speeches that it is not necessary for me to speak to you. But as you called me, I want to thank you for your faithfulness to Berlin during the last 10 months."
For 2 1/2 million people the time of darkness and hardship is over: the blockade of Berlin is ended.

01. The End of the Blockade
"The blockade is lifted!" Loudspeakers of the Berlin West Radio Station "RIAS" announce this important message in the city. The lifting of the blockade means the end of a severe and nerve-wracking time for West Berlin since June of last year. All faces show happiness at the return of normal conditions. The end of the blockade also means resumption of railway traffic between Western Germany and Berlin. The Allied Military Train is prepared after a recess of months on end. The goods train is set to drive over the zone borders. But the Air Lift is not stopped. Thus at British Airfield Berlin-Gatow, the first step is taken to build another 200-meter-long landing strip. Also at Rhine-Main Airfield at Frankfurt a new landing strip is being built. This strip will later server civil traffic. New hangars and ways to the starting strips are built also. The Air Lift is improved: a new C 97 monster plane will fly regularly between Frankfurt and Berlin. Weighing 71 tons, this stratosphere cruiser will carry a load of 26 tons. At Frankfurt it is loaded with coal for Berlin for its first test flight. Then this plane takes off, carrying ten times as much as the 2-motored Dakotas flying in the Air Lift at the beginning. 80 minutes later the plane lands. Although it comes down at speed, the propellers rotate at full speed in reverse, and stop the plane quickly. The stratosphere cruiser is the climax of the Air Lift operation. The end of the blockade is here - this is the occasion for Berlin's Burgomaster Reuter to speak for "Welt im Film"

In especially menaced districts, like Babenhausen/Hesse, the forests are dusted with special chemical insecticides. A new dusting device makes it possible to reach the highest tops of the trees. A cockchafer spring is also plaguing France. Modern technique assists: helicopters spray chemicals over the menaced district. The poison is also sprayed from big tank-trucks. The result: 50.000 dead cockchafers under a single oak.

In spring Holland has its big tulip season. Between Haarlem and Leiden are the world's largest flower fields. Thousands of foreigners and Hollanders enjoy this unique sight. a. Good-bye to General Clay
General Clay, American Military Governor in Germany, took leave of leading German officials at Frankfurt. The representatives of the Economic Council, Administrative Counsel and the Länderrat thanked the governor for his successful cooperation in Germany's reconstruction. After Dr. Köhler, President of the EC, Oberdirektor Dr. Pünder spoke. The Hesse Minister President Christian Stock spoke as representative of the Länderrat. General Clay said in his address that with his leaving a new phase of Germany's development would begin: a step towards self government and direct cooperation with other nations.

b. Motor Show, Reutlingen
Reutlingen in Wurttemberg was the scene of the 1st International Motor Show in Western Germany. Latest models gave an impressive picture of the state of the German motor-car industry. This is the Mercedes 170 V with modern coachwork. Foreign firms presented new and interesting models. The hit was the motor roller "Vespa" of the Italian firm Piaggio. 2 liters gasoline for 100 kilometers. Paris factories displayed an 18 PS-small car. "Champion" the new little German car with one cylinder 2-stroke-motor, especially constructed for traffic in the city. DKW-Meisterklasse in a new model. And 3-times Volkswagen. Normal body, with additional construction and luxury sport model. Many orders were given to 180 exhibitors at home and from abroad.

c. Basic Law
After 8 months the Parliamentary Council at Bonn finished the Basic Law for the new "Bundesrepublik Deutschland". With 53 ayes against 12 noes, the representatives okayed the new laws. Many German and foreign journalists witnessed this historical procedure. After the Western Military Governors' o.k. the Landtage of the 11 West German Lands have to ratify the law. Bonn was selected as the provisional federal capital. By a vote of 49 to 1 Black-Red-Gold was announced as the flag. Here thenew flag of the future "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" was hoisted up on the building of the Parliamentary Council.
