Düsseldorf is becoming again a city of art and fashion, which it had been before the war. Far outside of Germany's borders one knows the Düsseldorf theater with Gustaf Gründgens. The newly founded School of Fashions trains boys and girls from all parts of Germany to be top designers or first class tailors. The tailor-busts are being made by the students in spite of lack of money and material. An original proof of the Düsseldorf clothing industry: Fashion show on the street. An event which is typical of the enterprising spirit of this Rhineland city. 60 models show, on the "Königs-Allee", how one can dress well and pratically with little money. And here the heavily stricken Academy of Arts. Lessons are given in one part while the other part of the academy is being repaired. A flood of busy people go through Düsseldorf's streets; the Rhinish "Little Paris."

04. Soap Box Derby:

Grand Prix of Little Champions
The Grand Prix of the smallest car racers was held at Munich - the G.Y.A. Soap Box Derby. The Boys of the U.S. Zone of Germany worked for months until their pocket-edition racing cars were ready to start. And now the finals: out of 20.000 boys 36 started at Munich Theresienwiese for the championship. The soap boxes attained 40-kilometer speed on the 300 meter-long track. The winner was to get a valuable prize: a trip to America with his parents. More then 10.000 people watched the race. Attention! Brakes on! Watching seems to be just as dangerous as racing. And this is the champion: 13-year-old Eckehard Kornmesser of Kelheim.

05. New Exhibition - New Ideas
The Technical Fair in Essen demonstrates new methods of modern and practical building. A one-family house made of pumice stone and steel costs 12.000 D-marks. The furniture shows how the art of interior decoration is continously seeking more practical and cheaper methods of making furniture. This is a more expensive one-family house. The price is 7.000 D-marks. New ideas from 50 different branches of handicraft at the Handicraft Fair in Munich with booths of 700 exhibitors from all Western Germany and Berlin. Several useful slogans for the housewife. A new bucket. And an automatic current-checker for the subtenant. And the long-missed preserving apparatus. The "growing" bed - that means a convertible children's bed for all ages. And here, the easy-chair with radio and other comforts. At both fairs: wonderful effects and new ideas- for everyone.

06. Thomas Mann in Frankfurt
After a 16 year absence Thomas Mann visited Germany together with his wife. The 74 year-old author was presented with the Goethe-Prize in Frankfurt's Pauls-Church. In his speech Thomas Mann also talked about his attitude regarding Germany.
