02. updates soon: a. a Festival in Edinburgh artistic event first rank: Edinburgh opened with a solemn traditional ceremony of the 3. International music and Theatre Festival.
Artists of world renown and art lovers from many countries gave themselves a tryst in the romantic capital of Scotland. The great program included concerts, Opera, drama and ballet performances.
Among the German guests were with the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as Gustaf of Gründgens "Faust" - staging. German films received in the framework of an international film festival for the screening.
Edinburgh became the art metropolis of Europe for 3 weeks.

b. General Taylor, General Maxwell Taylor, the new American commander for Berlin, held his first press conference.
General Taylor stressed that he will continue the fixed policy of General Clay and its predecessor, General Howley.

Bayern Munich - SpVgg. Fürth Schweinfurt 05 - VfR Mannheim RW Oberhausen - S.V. Duisburg the summer break is over. The football season 1949/50 has begun. In the Rhine Stadium in Oberhausen the local Red and white and the Duisburger SV of the German Oberliga faced. Duisburg can go after slight superiority in the 36th minute lead. 01. Catholic Day at Bochum
The Catholics celebrated the 73rd anniversary of German Catholic-Day at Bochum. 500.000 believers from all parts of Western Germany and guests from 18 foreign nations were present. Cardinal Frings spoke to the Catholic population of Germany. The highlight of this demonstration was a message from Pope Pius XII in German, broadcast by the Vatican broadcasting station:

Edinburgh opened its third international music and theatre festival. Artists from many countries met in this romantic scottish town. Amongthe German guests were the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra und Gustaf Gründgens, who directed a "Faust" performance. German moving pictures were also shown. Edinburgh for 3 weeks became the art-metropolis of Europe.

b. General Taylor
General Maxwell Taylor, the new American Commandant for Berlin had his first Press Conference. General Taylor said that he would continue the policies of General Clay and General Howley. He recommended Berlin's reception as the 12th country into the Deutsche Bundesrepublik.

Again this year Leipzig holds its traditional Autumn Fair. Among the 6.000 firms present at this exhibition, 700 came from the Western Zone and 54 from foreign countries. Export business mostly was done with East-European States, with Poland, Romania, Finland and Czechoslovakia. Here are shots made in the streets of this famous town, which now has a completely different face: Political propaganda is seen and felt everywhere. Oberhausen vs Duisburg
The football season 1949/50 has opened. In the Rhine Stadium at Oberhausen the Oberhausen Red-White Club met the Duisburg V.S. from West-German League. After 36 minutes Duisburg leads. In spite of that Red-White keep their nerve. Tropic heat lies over the stadium. The 60th minute brings the end: a tie, 1 to 1. In the South-German League Bayern-München met the Spielvereinigung Fürth (black trousers). The Fürth football-club made a good impression while the Bavarians seemed tired. Nevertheless after a short time the Bavarians (red trousers) were leading with 1 : 0. But Fürth is on its way. In the 23rd minute the game is equal, and one minute later the game stands 2:1 for Fürth. In the second half the game stands 2:2. A quarter of an hour before the end of the game Fürth gets on the ball and shortly before the whistle they win 3:2. At Schweinfurt the Schweinfurt 05 plays against the German champion VfR Mannheim. In the first half the Schweinfurts lead. 1:0 for Schweinfurt. The Mannheimers play is disappointing. Their game is without skill. The fight is hard and sometimes not fair. But in spite of all the game ends with 2:1 for Mannheim.

04. USA Keeps the Davis Cup
Forest Hills, USA. America plays against Australia for the famous Davis Cup. Here the doubles. Bromwich-Sidwell, Australia, against the Americans Talbert - Mulloy. The first two single games had been won by the Americans - and now in the double, they are leading 6:3, 6:4. But the Australians fight hard. In a dramatic fight they win the third and fourth set. In the last set they are leading 8:7. Match ball. A sharply placed ball - and the Bromwich-Sidwell double win the game in 5 sets. Australia has one more chance to win the Davis Cup. The next day brings the decision. Ted Schroeder the winner from Wimbledon, meets the Australian champion Frank Sedgman. (Sedgman in front of the picture). Schroeder's balls are wonderfully placed. The game is without a chance for the young Australian. But here comes the match ball. Schroeder wins 6:4, 6:4, 6:3. America wins 4:1 and keeps the Davis Cup.
