First International Treaty with Germany
Foreign Diplomatic Representatives on the Petersberg
The American High Commissioner John McCloy and Bundes Chancellor Dr. Adenauer signed the first international treaty with Germany in Bonn. This contract refers to economic help for Western Germany and Berlin by the United States of America.
600 million D-marks were put at their disposal immediately as part of the 1 Billion D-mark program. This money is mainly to be used for reconstruction of industry and agriculture as well as for solving the housing problem. The High Commissioner pointed out in his speech that Western Germany became herewith a fully authorized partner of the European Recovery Program. Bundes Chancellor Adenauer expressed the gratitude of the German people.
Twelve foreign diplomatic representatives were officially accredited on the Petersberg. The diplomats presented their credentials to the High Commission.
The Doyen of the diplomatic representatives, Lieutenant General Maurice Pope, Canada, performed the introductory ceremony.
The French High Commissioner Francois-Poncet expressed his hope as to the fast normalization of the relationship between the Bundes Republic and the other western nations.
Important Events
1949 was the year of great political happenings in Germany and the whole world. Here is a fact of world historic importance: Western Germany voted for the first time in 16 years for a democratic government. Professor Dr. Theodor Heuss was elected Bundes President. Dr. Konrad Adenauer was elected Bundes Chancellor.
The three High Commissioners signed the occupation statute on the Petersberg and announced the end of Military Government.
Following this new move in the occupation policy of the Western Allies, a communist government was proclaimed in Eastern Berlin without election. Wilhelm Pieck became President of the German Eastern Republic, Otto Grotewohl Minister President, Walter Ulbricht Deputy Minister President. The celebration of this new Eastern Republic was a dangerous copy of the old Nazi regime.
The population of Western Berlin protested against this Soviet dominated Eastern State in a huge demonstration.
Cardinal Mindszenty was sentenced to life imprisonment by the communist government of his country. The sentence caused great indignation in the whole civilized world.
Harry Truman became President of the United States for the second time - this time elected by his people.
USA Secretary of State Marshall retired for health reasons. His successor is Dean Acheson, a distinguished expert in international politics.
The war in China reached its climax. Communist troops conquerred most of the country. Mao Tse-tung, leader of the red-chinese army, became president of the new Chinese republic.
Re-enforcemments are landed to defense the city.
The Atlantic Pact came into force. The foreign ministers of the 12 nations signed this treaty for a world's peace. at Washington. The contract in valid for 20 years. President Truman announced this important event to the whole Western world.
The soviet blockade of Berlin was lifted after 9 months. Motor cars and trains restored the connection between Berlin and Western Germany. Due of the most tragic episodes of Berlin's fight for freedom was over. Goods and food are brought to Berlin without delay. This time the Berliners met for a demonstration of hope and confidence. The airlift - the greatest operation in the history of aviation - ended a few months later.
The statesmen of the British Commonwealth met at London for a conference. The representatives of 500 million people agreed on political and economic cooperation.
Pandit Nehru, the Indian Minister President, undertook nummerous political trips through the whole world. He also visited the Dalai Lama, the nine-year old head of the Lamaism in Tibet.
Germany and the whole civilized world celebrated the 200th birthday of Germany's greatest poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
In Strassbourg the Advisory Assembly of the Europe Council was constituted. 100 delegates from 12 nations assembled. Winston Churchill, the most famous advocate of European Unity, spoke to 15 000 people.
One of the greatest composers of our time has gone from us: Richard Strauss.
The English pound was devaluated by 30 percent. Numerous nations followed this incisive measure.
At Berlin Kaiser Wilhelm Institute atomic movements were made visible for the first time on a film track.
Delegates of 59 nations participated at the laying of the foundation stone of the new home of the United Nations in New York. The whole world hopes that a house of real peace will be erected on this stone.
Sport High Lights
The first Six Day Race after an interval of 15 years took place in Munich. Eleven teams, with first-class foreign racers, started. The enthusiastic spectators were witnesses of an exciting race. Winner was - three laps ahead the Belgian team Naeye-Depauw.
The famous traditional tennis tournament in Wimbledon, England, brought many thrilling matches. Ted Schroeder, USA, was the winner of the cup and title of the unofficial world champion.
German football champion of 1949 is VfR Mannheim. The final against Borussia Dortmund at Stuttgart was one of the most thrilling matches in German football history. Here is an intense dramatic moment: Eleven meters for Mannheim! But Dortmund's goal keeper catches the ball. VfR Mannheim was only after extra time able to win the championship by 3:2.
The Japanese swimming champion Furuhashi, master of the crawl swimming, broke almost all records. Here we see his sensational 800 meter record in America, which was won by Furuhashi in 9 minutes and 35,5 seconds.
After an intermission of 10 years motor races were carried out on the Nuerburgring. Georg Meier won the 500 ccm solo machine contest by 124,4 kilometers per hour and thus made a new record. Paul Kling won the contest of the sport cars.
The most sensational k.o. of the year was the victory of Hoepner, when he got rid of his opponent Oremek in the second round of the middle weight boxing championship.
The German skiing season of 1949/1950 was opened with the traditional special race on the Zugspitze. The Austrian participants were best.

One of the best liked newsreel stories was the monkey's carussel of St. Louis. It turns once more around for the end of this year.
Water skis - are always wanted, but this mass-show of the water clowns was the funniest of them.
One runs, swims, flies records, but here one crawls for victory!
