b. Cardinal Spellman in Lisbon and Naples
Cardinal Spellman of New York visited on his way to Italy the Portuguese town of Fatima and the famous Mary portrait The Cardinal then arrived at Naples, followed by 500 American pilgrims to Rome. Unemployment - and what is done to fight it
Almost 2 million unemployed in the Bundesrepublic - more than 300.000 unemployed persons in Berlin - the main Problem of today. The Bundes Government and the Land Governments, the unions as well as the other economic units, press and radio - all of them have made this Problem center of their discussions. Meanwhile queues of unemployed workmen- and women gather in front of the bund offices and agencies. The money issued by the unemployment payment offices is the last help for these unfortunate people. On posters and in newspaper advertisements many of them try to find a way out of this involuntary vacation. Munich's unemployed persons have installed an organization of practical help. A small barrack is the center of the "Self Help". All sorts of work are accomplished here by skilled workers - and cheaply! Furthermore a "Building Community" was founded. The members, Munich unemployed persons, want to build apartments for their families. 80% of the money is given through state credits from ERP funds. The other 20% come from the work of the people who build these apartments. Great hope for everybody is the newly installed employment program of the Bundes Government with 3 billion D-marks. 1 million new jobs must be found this year with the helpof Marshall Plan money, and mainly through the building program of 300.000 apartments, as well as increasing the road and transportation program. The first decrease in the unemployment figures may already have started now.

These charming small toys are very important in the economic sense as the German toy industry has not - - in spite of still growing competition - - lost its former world-wide reputation and has a yearly turn-over of 40 to 50 millions of D-marks.

06. Strange Domestic Animals
May we introduce you to Moritz, the wild boar, who is the faithful domestic pet of Mr. Kuenkele from Urach, Wurttemberg. Moritz is two years of age and - as you can see - is very devoted. The boar follows her master at every step - even, if necessary, through the water. Everybody in this little town knows her and she even comes with her master to get an aperatif!
Now the parlour lion: "Nagana", the house pet of an American couple. Her tenderness weighs more than 300 pounds! Nagana's play mates are two- or four-legged, and while Nagana is affectionate they feel a little afraid. Circus atmosphere on the couch - a strange family idyl in an animal-loving house.
