(Originalton:" It is a deep reverence that we dedicate the World Freedom Bell to-day. We dedicated it to the eternal honour of all those who have given their lives in the course of freedom.")
The Freedom Bell
174 years ago in Philadelphia the Liberty Bell proclaimed the freedom and independence of the United States of America. Today a new Freedom Bell rings in Berlin, a symbol of the Crusade for Freedom.
The former Military Governor for Germany, General Clay, heads this greast movement for freedom and peace. Millions of Americans have signed their names on the scrolls of the Crusade, and this affirmed their readiness to fight tyranny whenever and wherever necessary.
General Eisenhower and many other famous personalities in the USA are leaders in this demonstration for freedom:
" ... pledge to resist aggression and tyranny wherever they appear. The words express what is in all our hearts. Your signature will be a blow for liberty."
The bell was cast in England. Brought to America, it was shown in all 48 states. Everywhere crowds gathered to sign the lists which accompanied the bell. It was a triumphal procession, from New York to Los Angeles, from San Francisco to Chicago. This is one of the demonstrations -- in Hollywood.
After its tour of the States the bell was sent over the ocean to Germany. This ship, which carried thousands of refugees from the terrors of the East to safety in the United States, brought this symbol of freedom from America to Europe.
From Bremerhaven the bell was transported to Berlin. General Clay arrives in Germany to attend the ceremonies.
The Freedom Bell crossed the East Zone in a sealed American military train. West Berlin, the only free city behind the Iron Curtain of Communism, awaited the event with keen interest. The first prominent Berliners greet the bell: Oberburgomaster Reuter and Frau Louise Schroeder.
The 10-ton bell was then hoisted up the tower of Schoeneberg City Hall. The inscription is a message from the New World to the Old: May The World Under God Have a New Birth of Freedom! The bell will ring for the first time on the 5th anniversary of the United Nations.
Almost half a million Berliners gathered before the City Hall and in the surrounding streets. And millions of people all over the world, concerned with the fate of this city, listened to the ceremonies over the radio.
The American Commandent in Berlin, Major General Taylor, greeted the guests from 30 nations:
"We are honored by the presence of the Chancellor of the German Federal Republic, Dr. Adenauer, and many members of his government. ... there is one whose name in history will be forever linked with Berlin -- General Lucius D. Clay."
American High Commissioner McCloy in his speech reminded the audience of Berlin's fight for freedom: "Berlin has the right to be given custody of this Freedom Bell -- Berlin, which has lived through tyranny and destruction. But a new spirit now rises from Berlin's ruins -- and new hope, which resists oppression. Berlin has become a symbol for freedom because of her stand during the Communist Blockade ... the effort to starve millions of human beings into political submission."
The High Commissioner continued:
"Well-remembered pictures appear again -- concentration camps, forced labor, propaganda, marching youth. The words "Peace" and "Freedom" are being misused again. There is only one foundation stone upon which peace and unity can be built, and that is freedom for the individual in a free state."
Oberburgomaster Reuter then spoke to the Berliners and their friends from the Western world:
"... The Freedom Bell arrived to send its message from our City Hall to other countries. We called on the rest of the world for help on the 9th of September, 1948, and we asked them not to give up this city. And they answered our call. With the help given her, Berlin was able to defeat the attempt to starve 2 million people. Today the world presents us with the Freedom Bell -- a gift we accept proudly. The sound of this bell -- our bell -- will not be heard in Berlin and Germany alone, but will cross the ocean to the great American people, and will also be heard clearly in the East."
General Clay, during his speech, read the declaration which was signed by millions of Americans, and sent to Berlin with the bell:
"I believe in the sacredness and dignity of the individual.
I believe that all men have the right for freedom, equally, from God.
I pledge to resist agression and tyranny wherever they appear on earth, that this world, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom."
Then General Clay, representing this Crusade for Freedom, pressed the button which started the bell.
2,000 radio stations broadeast the sound of the bell to every quarter of the world.
The Freedom Bell is ringing -- may its message never die. The End
(Originalton: "pledges to resist aggression and defeat wherever they appear. Its words express what is in all our hearts. Your signature on it will be a vote for liberty.")
(Originalton: "We are honoured by the presence of the Chancellor of the German Federal Republic Dr. Adenauer accompagnied by many ministers of his government ...")
(Originalton: "... there is one whose name in history will be forever linked with Berlin: General Lucius D. Clay.")
(Originalton: "... effort to starve millions of human beeings into political submission, it has become a city symbolic of freedom ...")
(Originalton: "Just as the Nazis failed 5 year ago. There is only one foundation stone upon which peace and unity can be built and this is freedom.")
(Originalton: "... in the secretness and dignity of the individual. I belive that all men have the right to freedom equally from God. I pledge to resist aggression and tyranny wherever they appear on earth that this world under God shall have a new birth of freedom.")
