01. Actualities in Brief:
a. New Honorary Degrees of the University of Maryland
At Bonn University, the rector of the university of Maryland, US, presented Honorary Degrees to distinguished personalities, among them John McCloy, Federal President Heuss and Federal Chancellor Dr. Adenauer. Chancellor Adenauer and High Commissoner McCloy became honorary doctors of law, Federal President Heuss honorary doctor of philosophy. The ceremony closed with an academic celebration for the new honorary doctorates.
b. International Committee, Brussels
In Brussels, the "International Committee to Combat Concentration Camps" held a meeting. In the form of a court of justice against Soviet slave labour, former inhabitants of Soviet concentration camps were heard as witnesses. The international court condemned the Soviet system of concentration camps before the public of the world as a method of outright slavery.
c. North Pole Flight
The first single-engined plane ever to fly above the North Pole arrived in New York. The flight from Norway to Alaska and from there to New York lasted only 20 hours. During the flight of this converted Mustang fighter, new navigation instruments were tested. The pilot of the "Flying Gas Tank", Charles Blair, brought the first airmail from Europe via the North Pole to the USA. A special stamp made for this flight becomes a desireable rarity for collectors.
d. ERP Committee, Berlin
The emergency program for Berlin was prolonged till September by the Berlin ERP Committee. With the help of 45 million marks from a special fund, the senate of Berlin is now able to give work to 45.000 unemployed peoples. Senator Dr. Hertz said: Original Sounds: "We will support the training of youth. We intend to give work to the unemployed, and we think particularly of the emergency program, in connection with the building of houses to help the building situation, which is very bad in Berlin."
02. Newsflashes from Germany:
a. Wine Week, Berlin
During "Wine Week" the square in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall in Berlin changed into paradise for wine lovers. The ministry of viticulture and the union of wine-growers gave 2.000 liters of wine free to the public. The wine flows into the glasses of the thirsty Berliners. Wine for Berliners- it was a feast which united the town with the Rhineland.
b. Schluchsee Power Station
The Schluchsee, power station in Baden is finished. It took 23 years to built the three reservoirs and 3 power stations. The last power station "Waldshut", which is now running, was mainly built with the help of ERP. A technical wonder, which will soon supply South Western Germany with 500 million kilowatt hours a year.
c. Starring Tour of the Roman Opera
The ensemble of the "Teatro dell' Opera" in Rome made a starring tour through German towns. As in Wiesbaden and Stuttgart, the performance of the 200 guests in Munich became a triumph for the classic Italian opera and a feast of beautiful voices. Here is a part of Verdi's opera "Aida."
d. Squirrel
A squirrel baby with a past. "Bimbo" lost its mother at the age of 3 days. A schoolboy from Lammstedt, Hanover, found the orphan and took it home. The dachshund "Purzel" took over the nursing.
03. Sports:
a. Racing On The Nuerburgring
The Nuerburgring, the most beautiful and most difficult race track in the world, saw again dramatic duels by racing competitors from 11 nations. Cars and motorbikes of all classes raced through the romantic Eifel-land. All the motorbikes in the side-car race came from the BMW plant. No. 18, Mohr of Schweinfurt, drove one record round after the other. After a sharp duel with Hillebrand, Hillebrand passes Mohr and wins by half a meter. 57 bikes compete in the race for half-liter bikes. No. 1, Schorch Meier, leads during the 5th round in front of Walter Zeller. Only seconds later: No. 21, Zeller, passes Meier again. The exciting duel continues. Meier takes the lead again and wins the race.
b. Boxings Rux vs. Milan
Conny Rux beats the Italian Heavy-weight Champion Giorgio Milan (black hair). The fight was the main event at Ernst-Merck Hall, in Hamburg. In the first six rounds Conny Rux showed his superiority. The 7th round brought the end. Conny Rux floored his opponent three times. After the 4th Knock-down Referee Pippow stopped the unequal fight. The winner Conny Rux was cheered enthusiastically.
04. England:
An Out-Sider Wins The Derby 1951
One million spectators gathered at the famous Epsom track. The Royal family as well as the "Man in the Street" were present. With the start of 33 horses, the racing fever reached its climax. The horses are close together as they come to the famous Tattenham Corner. The lead changes. The favorite "Ki Ming" falls back. The out-sider "Arctic Prince" goes out in front. One million spectators roar. "Arctic Prince" is far in front of the other horses. The performance of this horse is an amazing surprise. 400 meters before the finish, it leads by 6 lengths. The slow-motion camera reveals the brilliant style of "Arctic Prince." An unusual Derby finale, an out-sider of rare quality: fast, beautiful and victorious.
