60th Anniversary of the Nikita Khrushchev’s Visit to the United States (September 15 - 27, 1959)

In September 1959 Nikita Khrushchev follows an invitation by US President Eisenhower and is the first Soviet head of state to ever visit the United States of America. The two statesmen have high hopes for a rapprochement between the two enemy superpowers.

Eisenhower’s plan is to use his guest’s 10-day cross-country trip to prove to him the advantages of capitalism and impress him with the American standard of living. Khrushchev’s aim, on the other hand, is to refute deeply engrained anti-communist prejudice and give it a human face instead.

A remnant from the just-ended McCarthy era is the prevalent mixture of fear of and curiosity about the “personified evil”. And yet Khrushchev manages to capture the Americans with his quick-wittedness, humour and joviality. The media certainly plays a big part too, by following him everywhere he goes and by turning his visit into the first major event in broadcasting history. Whether Khrushchev attends dinner banquets with politicians or celebrities, visits a supermarket or a farm, journalists await him with their recording devices. They also document his legendary fit of anger when he finds out that his visit to Disneyland is cancelled, which is met with much popularity.

The last three days of his visits are reserved for talks between the two heads of state. They are held at Camp David, to guarantee more privacy. However, these talks don’t lead to an agreement regarding contentious issues such as the Berlin question, disarmament or trade relations.

Nevertheless he returns the invitation to Eisenhower and the relationship between the two countries does indeed improve—if only for the next few months.
