60. Jahrestag der Flutkatastrophe in Südfrankreich (2. Dezember 1959)

Am 2. Dezember 1959 ereignet sich eine der größten Katastrophen in der Geschichte des modernen Frankreichs. In den späten Abendstunden bricht der nahe der Côte d’Azur gelegene Malpasset-Staudamm innerhalb kürzester Zeit in sich zusammen. Die anfangs fast vierzig Meter hohe Sturzflut erreicht zuerst die Weiler Malpasset und Bozon, die komplett zerstört werden. Nach etwa zwanzig Minuten begräbt die noch drei Meter hohe Flutwelle große Teile Stadt Fréjus unter ihren Geröllmassen. 423 Menschen verlieren ihr Leben. Einige Opfer werden nie gefunden, sie wurden bis ins Mittelmeer gespült. Auf einer Strecke von mehreren hundert Metern flussabwärts zeugen bis heute haushohe Bruchstücke der Mauer von der Gewalt des herabstürzenden Wassers.

Die elegante und grazile Barrage de Malpasset entstand nach Entwürfen des renommierten Wasserbau-Ingenieurs André Coyne und wurde 1954 fertiggestellt. Das 66 Meter hohe, bogenförmige Bauwerk war mit einer Stärke von knapp sieben Metern in der Talsohle und nur anderthalb Metern an der Dammkrone die damals „dünnste Staumauer der Welt“. Nach ihrem Einsturz bricht daher eine technikskeptische Diskussion um die Sicherheit von zeitgenössischen Staudämmen aus.

Als tatsächliche Ursache des Unglücks wird eine tektonische Störung unterhalb der Mauer festgestellt. Durch Regenfälle hatte sich der Wasserspiegel außerdem auf eine noch nie dagewesene Höhe angestaut und die Belastung so zusätzlich verstärkt.

Vor knapp einem Jahrzehnt werden schließlich Informationen publik, nach denen der Bundesnachrichtendienst Hinweise über geplante Anschläge der Front de Libération Nationale (FNL) – der algerischen "Nationalen Befreiungsfront" – gegen Ölanlagen und auch gegen Staudämme in Frankreich erhalten, diese aber nicht an die Behörden des Nachbarlandes weitergeben haben soll.
