60th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall (August 13, 1961)
On Sunday, August 13, 1961, GDR security forces sealed off the sector border in Berlin on the orders of Walter Ulbricht, Chairman of the Council of State. Early in the morning, stone blockades and barbed wire entanglements were erected, which guarded construction crews would replace over the next few days by with a two-meter-high wall. The S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines between East and West were cut, and the number of border crossing points got reduced to a minimum.
The inner-German border had already been closed since the 1950s, now Berlin was divided as well. Until then, about half a million people had crossed the sector borders every day. 50,000 East Berliners were now cut off from their jobs in the West; friends and families were literally separated overnight. Discontent and spontaneous protests erupted on both sides. Attempts to get past the barriers produced dramatic scenes.
With the construction of the Wall, the GDR leadership sought a way out of the dire situation that had arisen in 1961, particularly as a result of the continuing mass exodus to the West. Since the GDR had been founded twelve years earlier, one sixth of the total population - about three million people - had already left the country, mostly well-educated young workers and academics. The border closure was also intended to prevent the outflow of comparatively cheap goods and the weakening of the currency through illegal currency exchange.
While the Allies were caught off guard by the building of the Wall, they decided against a counter-reaction. They didn’t want to risk a third world war because of Berlin. Willy Brandt, mayor of the now cut-off western part of the city, appealed to the USA in its capacity as a protecting power. President Kennedy finally sent his deputy Lyndon B. Johnson and the hero of the airlift Lucius D. Clay to Berlin as a sign of solidarity. Two years later the President himself came to visit the city.
