60th Anniversary of the Tank Confrontation at Checkpoint Charlie (October 27, 1961)

Only ten weeks after the construction of the Wall, another explosive situation occurred in the divided ciry of Berlin: US and Soviet tanks confronted each other at "Checkpoint Charlie".

In the days preceding the confrontation, GDR police officers had repeatedly asked plain clothes U.S. officers to show their papers without being authorized to do so. In accordance with the four-power status, representatives of the Allies enjoyed full freedom of movement throughout the city; only the occupying powers themselves were permitted to check each other's identity documents.

General Lucius D. Clay, sent to Berlin by John F. Kennedy as a special envoy after the construction of the Berlin Wall, took the opportunity to set an example.

On October 25, the "Father of the Airlift" ordered tanks to drive up to "Checkpoint Charlie" for the first time. Following talks between the U.S. city commander and his Soviet counterpart the tanks were withdrawn again,. Two days later, Gen. Clay repeated the threatening gesture, but this time the other side followed suit. For 16 hours, U.S. and Soviet tanks kept their guns pointed at each other at "Checkpoint Charlie" at a distance of only a few hundred meters. The threat of war seemed near.

A telephone conversation between the heads of government finally defused the situation. While Kennedy made it clear that he did not share Clay's confrontational course, Khrushchev assured him that the GDR had acted arbitrarily. As a result, the tanks were gradually withdrawn. East Berlin's powers vis-à-vis the occupying powers were thus clearly restricted, the USSR's responsibility for the GDR was reaffirmed, and the presence of the Western Allies in Berlin would not be questioned. From now on, however, Allied officials had to identify themselves when crossing the border.
