1959 Tibetan Uprising and the Dalai Lama’s Flight to India (March 10-21, 1959)

The Chinese had occupied Tibet for almost a decade when a rebellion erupts in the Central Asian country in March of 1959. When the People’s Republic was founded at the end of the Chinese civil war Mao Zedong decided to tackle “Tibet’s return to the Chinese motherland” and ordered the soldiers of his liberation army to invade a country that had been de facto sovereign since 1913. After a number of futile appeals to the United Nations Tibet is left with no choice other than to start negotiations with its overpowering neighbour. In the spring of 1951 they sign the “Seventeen Point Agreement for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet,” which states that Tibet is granted extensive religious, cultural and political freedom, yet in reality things turn out quite differently.

Pervasive intrusions and unwanted reforms feed the resentment of the populace and increasingly lead to civil unrest. In March of 1959 rumours about the potential kidnapping of Dalai Lama abound and as a result 300,000 Tibetans assemble in the capital to protect their leader. Ensuing protests for Tibet’s independence lead to open clashes. While the Dalai Lama manages to flee across the Indian border Peking relentlessly crushes the insurrection. Tens of thousands of Tibetans lose their lives, just as many follow his holiness into exile. China would rigorously enforce its claim to power and establishes communism as state doctrine. The Dalai Lama goes on and founds the Tibetan Government in Exile a few weeks after his arrival in India, which he heads until 2011.
