Am 2. Juli 2022 wäre der visionäre Modeschöpfer Pierre Cardin 100 Jahre alt geworden.

Seine Karriere beginnt der Sohn italienischer Einwanderer mit einer Schneiderlehre in Saint-Etienne, bevor er nach der Befreiung Frankreichs 1944 nach Paris geht und dort als Modezeichner im Haus Paquin arbeitet. Drei Jahre später wechselt er zu Dior und entwickelt dort den legendären „New Look“ mit.

Im Alter von nur 28 gründet er sein eigenes Unternehmen und revolutioniert fortan die Modewelt. Als erster Pariser Couturier lanciert er eine Herrenlinie und wird zum Wegbereiter der Celebrity-Dressings. So stattet er beispielsweise die Beatles 1963 mit den berühmt gewordenen reverslosen Anzügen aus. Bald beschränkt sich Pierre Cardin jedoch nicht mehr nur auf Maßschneiderei, sondern sorgt mit Prêt-à-Porter-Kollektionen für die Demokratisierung der Mode. Er arbeitet mit geometrischen und skulpturalen Formen, mit knalligen Farben und neuartigen Materialien wie Vinyl und Plexiglas. Damit trifft er den Zeitgeist der Swinging Sixties und wird zum Pionier des sogenannten Space-Age-Designs.

Sukzessive erweitert Pierre Cardin sein Repertoire und entwirft nun auch Möbel und Alltagsgegenstände, vor allem aber vergibt er weltweit Lizenzen für die Herstellung und den Vertrieb von Produkten unter seinem Namen – vom Plattenspieler bis zum Mineralwasser. Frühzeitig steckt er dabei seine Fühler auch Richtung China und Sowjetunion aus.

Durch seine Geschäftstüchtigkeit avanciert er zu einem der reichsten Männer Frankreichs und kauft sich, was er will – vom Palast Giacomo Casanovas in Venedig, bis zur Schlossruine des Marquis de Sade in Lacoste oder dem Maxim’s Restaurant in Paris, von dem er Dependancen in der ganzen Welt eröffnet. Zu seinem Imperium gehören schließlich mehrere hundert Firmen und Fabriken in 180 Ländern mit bis zu 200.000 Mitarbeiter:innen.

Als er im Dezember 2020 im Alter von 98 Jahren stirbt, ist er der am längsten im Modegeschäft tätige Mensch der Welt. Seine Ideen für eine Mode für „die Welt von Morgen" haben ihn unsterblich gemacht.
