50th Anniversary of the Assassination of Martin Luther King (April 4, 1968)
Martin Luther King is only 39 years old when he is shot to death in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. His stalwart struggle against racial segregation and discrimination of the black population in the USA has made him the target of reactionary forces. Despite having been attacked with rocks, guns and bombs more than twenty times he never wavered and consistently abided by the principle of non-violence. However, his own death, of all things, ignites bloody riots. Members of the Black Panther movement had been critical of the peaceful methods of the Baptist minister for quite some time. Now they call for a revenge for his murder. Riots erupt in more than 100 cities, dozens of people are killed, about 2,600 are injured, more than 20,000 arrests are made. King’s Ghandi-inspired strategy of nonviolent resistance, on the other hand, with its protests, sit-ins and boycotts, but also King’s countless speeches and sermons had been quite effective. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 officially outlaws discrimination. The Voting Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act prohibit discrimination when it comes to voting and the sale, renting or financing of housing. During the final years of his life the civil rights activist is committed in his fight against the war in Vietnam and the poverty and economic disadvantage of the black population. In the beginning of April 1968 he travels to Memphis to support the strike of the local sanitation workers, who are primarily African American. They demand better working conditions and higher pay.
The small-time criminal James Earl Ray is arrested for the assassination of Martin Luther King and sentenced to 99 years in jail. Doubts about his acting single-handedly or any involvement at all never go away. After three days the accused recants his confession. From that day on Ray asserts his innocence. Three decades after the assassination lawyers of the victims and the alleged murderer form a surprising alliance and re-open the case. The jury comes to the unanimous verdict that Ray could not have acted all alone, and that there was a conspiracy behind King’s murder.
