50th Anniversary of Alexandra’s Death († July 31, 1969)

On July 31, 1969 the singer Alexandra dies in car crash at the young age of 27. In the preceding two years she had shot to the top of the charts with hits such as “Zigeunerjunge” (“Gypsy Boy”) and “Sehnsucht” (“longing”). When the well-known producer Fred Weyrich discovers the young woman with the dark voice she was singing with the band City Preachers and was studying acting with the UFA-star Margot Höpfner. Alexandra, who was born Doris Treitz in Heydekrug (today Lithuania) in 1942, speaks Russian among other languages, and so the record company decides to turn her into a star with an Easter European touch. In 1967 her debut album “Premiere mit Alexandra” is released. Following a short-lived marriage she chooses her artist name in reference to her two-year old son Alexander.

Even though the folky Schlager songs match her image, have their finger on the pulse and even bestow her international popularity, Alexandra yearns for artistic autonomy. She plays piano and guitar and wants to write her own more highbrow chansons, just like her role models Juliette Greco and Gilbert Bécaud. Latter invites her to his show in the early days of her career. She goes on tour with Salvatore Adamo and plays a German version of his international hit “Tombe la Neige”.  Udo Jürgens and her write and record a song together, “Illusion” is released on her second album.  She wrote the lyrics for six of the songs and composed four of the songs herself on the eponymously titled  “Alexandra”. One of them is the song “Mein Freund, der Baum” (“My Friend, the Tree), which becomes a hit after her untimely death and ultimately makes her immortal.
