50. Jahrestag der Wiederherstellung der Telefonverbindung zwischen West- und Ost-Berlin (31.01.1971)

Im Januar 1971 wird der Telefonverkehr zwischen Ost- und West-Berlin wieder aufgenommen. Knapp zwei Jahrzehnte zuvor hatte die DDR knapp 4000 innerstädtische Kabel kappen lassen. Sie reagierte damit auf den am 26. Mai 1952 mit den drei Westmächten geschlossenen Deutschlandvertrag, mit dem des Besatzungsstatut von 1949 in wesentlichen Teilen aufgehoben und eine weitere Integration West-Berlins in die Bundesrepublik beschlossen wurde. Noch am selben Tag ordnete der Ministerrat der DDR die Einrichtung einer 5-km-Sperrzone entlang der innerdeutschen Grenze, die Schließung der Straßenverbindungen zwischen Ost- und West-Berlin sowie eine Unterbrechung fast aller Fernsprechleitungen in der geteilten Stadt an. Um weiterhin Telefonate zu ermöglichen, richten die West-Berliner Postämter an der Sektorengrenze Münzfernsprecher für DDR-Geld ein. Nach dem Bau der Mauer fällt jedoch auch diese Option der Kontaktaufnahme weg.

Im Zuge der neuen Ostpolitik Willy Brandts nehmen die beiden deutschen Staaten 1970 Gespräche auf und vereinbaren als einen der ersten Schritte der gegenseitigen Annäherung die Schaffung neuer Telefonleitungen.

Am 31. Januar werden schließlich die ersten Verbindungen über Potsdam geschaltet und 724 Gespräche von West nach Ost sowie 829 Gespräche von Ost nach West vermittelt.

Erst vier Jahre später kann wieder per Selbstwahl von West- nach Ost-Berlin telefoniert werden. Der Telefonverkehr ist aber sehr störanfällig und wird von beiden Seiten massiv überwacht. Selbst nach dem Fall der Mauer dauert es noch etliche Jahre, bis Telefonate zwischen Ost und West uneingeschränkt funktionieren.
