Les Humphries gelingt zu Beginn der 1970er-Jahre eine der erstaunlichsten Popkarrieren, die die Bundesrepublik je gesehen hat. Mit seinen The Les Humphries Singers stürmt er die Hitparaden und macht sie mit einem Mix aus Gospel, Soul, Beat, Swing und Blues zu einer der erfolgreichsten Gesangsgruppen der Welt.

Der am 10. August 1940 im Großraum London in einfache Verhältnisse geborene John Leslie Humphries bekommt früh Klavierunterricht und tritt im Alter von 13 Jahren ins Musikkorps der britischen Marine ein. Nachdem er die Royal Navy im Rang eines Master Band Sergeant verlassen hat, gründet er 1966 die Gruppe The Summer Set und knüpft bei Auftritten erste Kontakte nach Deutschland. Nach der Übersiedlung nach Hamburg spielt er unter anderem in Achim Reichels Band Wonderland. Inspiriert durch den Gospelhit „Oh Happy Day“ gründet er 1969 gemeinsam mit Jimmy Bilsbury The Les Humphries Singers und stellt dafür einen internationalen, multiethnischen Chor zusammen, der das Flair von „Hair“ und Woodstock in die deutschen Wohnzimmer trägt. Mit Songs wie "Mexico", "Mama Loo" und "Kansas City" landet die Gruppe einen Hit nach dem anderen. Im Zeitraum von nur sechs Jahren verkaufen The Les Humphries Singers rund 40 Millionen Platten. Ihre Europatournee „Sound 73“ wird zu einem legendären Erfolg. Der Bandleader ist daneben auch als Pianist, Arrangeur und Produzent für andere Musiker*innen wie Hildegard Knef tätig und komponiert die Titelmelodie für die Krimiserie „Derrick“. 1972 heiratet er die Schauspielerin und Sängerin Dunja Rajter. Doch Alkohol, Gewalt und Betrügereien beenden 1976 den Höhenflug. Beim Grand Prix d'Eurovision erreicht Humphries Gruppe nur den drittletzten Platz, seine Ehefrau reicht die Scheidung ein und die Steuerfahndung sucht ihn mit Haftbefehl. Er setzt sich nach Großbritannien ab, die Band löst sich auf. Anfang der 1990er versucht Humphries ein Comeback, zieht sich jedoch bald wieder enttäuscht in seine Heimat zurück. Unbemerkt von der Öffentlichkeit stirbt er 2007.
