Les Humphries’ 80th Birthday (August 10, 1940-December 26, 2007)

Les Humphries’ career as a pop star in the early 1970s is unlike any other in the Federal Republic of Germany. He takes the charts by storm with The Les Humphries Singers and turns them into one of the most successful singing groups in the world with a genre mix consisting of gospel, soul, beat, swing and blues.

On August 10, 1940 John Leslie Humphries is born in greater London into modest circumstances. Nonetheless he attends piano lessons from an early age and enters the Royal Marines Corps Band at the age of 13. He leaves the Royal Navy as a Master Band Sergeant and goes on to found the band The Summer Set in 1966. At one of their performances he makes his first German contacts. After moving to Hamburg he plays with a number of outfits, among them Achim Reichel’s band Wonderland. Inspired by the gospel hit „Oh Happy Day“ he and Jimmy Bilsbury found The Les Humphries Singers in 1969, which brings a flair of „Hair“ and „Woodstock“ into German living rooms with its international multi-ethnic choir. The band has one hit after another, with songs like „Mexico“, „Mama Loo“ and „Kansas City“. Within just six years The Les Humphries manage to sell around 40 million records. Their Europe Tour „Sound 73“ becomes legendary. The leader of the band also works as pianist, arranger and producer for other musicians like Hildegard Knef. He also composes the theme song for the legendary German TV crime show „Derrick“. In 1972 Les Humphries marries actress and singer Dunja Rajter.

Alcohol, violence and fraud interfere with his career and in 1976 his years of success are over: The Humphries Group comes in third from last at the Grand Prix d’Eurovision, his wife files for divorce and the tax authorities have an arrest warrant out for him. He absconds to the UK and the band dissolves. Humphries tries to make a comeback in the early 1990s but disappointed he soon returns to his home country. He passes away in 2007, unbeknownst to the public.
