Mary Quant Turns 85 (* February 11, 1934)
One of the most revolutionary British fashion designers—she shaped the look of the „Swinging Sixties“ like no other—Mary Quant, „Queen of the mini skirt“. But it’s not just her ultra short skirts and dresses, mixed with ribbed tight tops, bold hot pants and colourful tights (before women used to wear nylons and garters) that cause a stir. She also introduces bright new colours such as plum, scarlet red or grape green, and she is the first one to make shoes and coats from PVC. The young designer wants to counter old-fashioned and impractical women’s clothing with a more contemporary, confident and affordable fashion that is suitable for every day wear. Her instinct really hit a nerve. Thanks to models like Twiggy the Mary Quant look becomes a paragon for an entire generation in the late 1960s.
It all started in the year 1955, when Mary Quant opened her first boutique in the trendy Chelsea area. Dissatisfied with the wholesale offerings the illustrator started designing and making her own clothing. Her boutique “Bazaar” quickly becomes a trendy hotspot, helped along by its unusual display windows, loud music and extended opening hours. Soon she opens additional stores, signs a contract with an American department store chain, expands with the less expensive second brand “Ginger Group” and launches her own cosmetic line. Later she also designs men’s and children’s fashion, accessories, home accessories, expands her cosmetic line and maintains so-called colour shops all over the world. In 2000 she retreats from the operative business but is still active as a consultant.
