70th Anniversary of the Attempted Assassination of Konrad Adenauer (March 27, 1952)

On March 27, Konrad Adenauer narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. In the evening, the Munich police had opened a package addressed to him. A bomb exploded, killing one officer and injuring five others. Two boys had brought the parcel to police headquarters after being asked by an unknown person to post it at the post office and becoming suspicious.

In a letter of confession, an "organization of Jewish partisans" assumed responsibility for the attack on the German chancellor. They were opposed to the negotiations on the reparation of the Federal Republic of Germany towards Israel that were currently taking place in Wassenaar near The Hague. Adenauer's course of reconciliation was at times met with vehement rejection; the compensation payments offered were perceived, especially by the Israeli opposition, as "blood money" for the murder of millions of European Jews and the guilt of the "murdering people" that could never be redeemed.

However, since the Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, as well as Konrad Adenauer, were very much interested in the success of the venture - the former in need of money due to the influx of hundreds of thousands of homeless Jewish immigrants, and the latter striving for a West integration and political sovereignty of the FRG - they downplayed the political explosiveness of the incidents. This was accommodated by the fact that the German police could not question several suspects, either because they had gone into hiding, had already been deported to Israel by France, or could not be linked to the crime. Against all odds, six months after the assassination, the two statesmen met in Luxembourg and finally signed the reparation agreement they were seeking.

Adenauer personally invited the two Munich boys who saved his life to Bonn to thank them. As a sign of gratitude he presented them with golden watches.
