Year in review

1957 in the mirror of the newsreels. Encouraged by the success of the survey in the last year we again requested the opinion of our colleagues all over the world about the most important events in their countries.
For many, there was no special highlight. You remain unheralded.
Before the responses of other countries but look at first from our own country.
The tragedy remains unforgotten the "Pamir" and their ship's boys.
Only 6 of 86 sailors were rescued. The most important political event was the election. Dr Adenauer took over the Office of Chancellor for the third time. Our fellow countrymen across the border of the zone experienced a surprising exchange of notes for the second time in 10 years.
The outcome of the Polish election was a vote of confidence for the idiosyncratic Gomulka.
Norway took leave of King Haakon VII. In the 52 years of his reign he had never been anything else as the first citizen of his country. Jean Sibelius died, mourned Finland to his greatest son out of the realm of music.
A major earthquake shook Mexico City. Over 100 people were killed.
Other natural disaster surprised the Spaniards. Torrential rains left destroyed houses and homeless families in Valencia.
The land reclamation from the Zuider sea was the most important this year for Holland. The island "Brand" was connected to the Mainland through dykes.
The State visit of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and Prince Bernhard, the Sweden is unforgettable.
The enthusiasm of the Americans was great, when Queen Elizabeth visited their country. England itself was taken from the railway disaster in London. The crash in the fog demanded 100 dead and 200 wounded.
The oil holes in the Sahara desert, France attached particular importance. The hinterland of Algeria has thus become a significant economic factor. The Constitution of the Republic of Tunis was an essential step to independence for the former French colony. Habib Bourgiba was its first President.
Morocco became a Kingdom. The Sultan took the title "King Mohammed V" on.
In West Africa, Gold Coast emerged from the British Crown Colony the independent Ghana.
The British Confederation of Malaya saw its independence day.
The elections confirmed the prominent role of Nehru's India.
The interest of Japanese focuses especially on the process of Girard. For the first time, an American soldier was in a non-US Court.
The Chinese national Republic celebrated the 46th anniversary of the Chinese revolution with a demonstrative parade. At the same time celebrated Beijing Maotse Tung with the Hungarian special guest Kádár the 8th anniversary of Red China.
In Prague welcomed the former Communist Party Chief and current President Novotny emphasizes welcome important guests from the Kremlin. Belgrade was the last official performance of Marshal of Zhukov. Shortly after the Defense Minister had to go.
Graciously, like the Italians, they called the visit of German President Heuss the most important event of the year. The greatest enthusiasm but there was with the sports-crazed Italians about the world record run of Wladimir Kuz in Rome. Who ran the 5,000 meters in 13:35 "European sportsman of the year" selected Russian, also our Belgian friends opted for a sporting event. Belgium of the strongest tennis nation in Europe was in the play for the Davis Cup.
The Jordanians were impressed by the arms of the United States. It was a kind of counter air bridge against the support of Syria by the Soviet Union.
A Soviet fleet visit to the port of Latakia was impressed by the Syrians.
The Egyptians enthusiasts still on their success in the Suez conflict. The "day of the channel" was the most important holiday. More important than the national reports but, our weekly news colleagues called those transnational events, which all go to. -Hydrogen bombs exploded in East and West. For the first time, the International Atomic Energy Agency, advocating for the solely peaceful use of nuclear energy held in Vienna. In England however, radioactive contamination through a nuclear reactor showed that the peaceful application of nuclear power is not safe. And the development of rocket technology with almost feverish haste was promoted in the East as in the West. Next to it was the conquest of space as large, lokkendes goal. Then came the day, the "Sputnik I" as the first artificial boots circled our planet. The whole world heard the Sendezeichen that seem to announce the beginning of the interplanetary age. And again an animal in the service of the people. Because we reach for the stars, laika circled the Earth, until the end came.
A dog only, of course. However, an old Word says: "God sleeps in the stone, breathes in the plant, dreams in the animal and awakens in man."
