100 Years Ago the „Anastasia Legend“ was Born (February 17, 1920)
On February 17, 1920 one of the 20th century’s greatest legends is born when a young woman tries to take her own life. That day the police rescue a 24-year old from the Landwehr Canal in Berlin. The woman claims to have no memory, she doesn’t even remember her name. She is committed to a psychiatric hospital where another patient finds her to resemble the youngest daughter of the last Russian Tsar. Ever since the Bolsheviks’ assassination of the Romanovs in the aftermath of the revolution there has been a persistent rumour that one member of the family had survived. And so Jane Doe turns into the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia—and into a new darling of the yellow press. Doubts surround her identity from the very beginning, yet the mysterious young woman has a lot of supporters, especially exiled Russians, to whom she represents a living relict from a bygone world.
After moving to the USA in the late 1920s and changing her name to Anna Anderson she claims the reserves that the Tsar had deposited abroad. This would keep the justice system occupied for decades to come. In 1970 the last proceeding in Germany is finally suspended—to her disadvantage. Nonetheless she adheres to her controversial lineage until her death in 1984.
It is only after the Soviet Union ceases to exist that it is possible to search for and exhume the remains of the Tsar family. Thanks to modern science DNA analysis proves without a doubt that the suicidal woman from Berlin was in fact not “Anastasia” but a runaway agricultural labourer from West Prussia. The sensational story has inspired a number of films, including one from 1956, with Ingrid Bergman in the leading role.
