John Glenn 100th Birthday Celebration (* July 18, 1921)
John Glenn goes down in the history of space travel as the first American to orbit the globe.
Born in 1921 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of a plumber, he gained his first flying experience at college as part of a program for up-and-coming pilots. When the USA entered World War II in 1942, he abandoned his chemistry studies and enlisted for the military. After flight training he serves first in the Pacific War and later in the Korean War as a fighter pilot. As a test pilot, Glenn completes the first transcontinental flight in 1957, flying from Los Angeles to New York in three and a half hours at an average speed just above the speed of sound.
He applies for the space program of NASA, newly founded after the "Sputnik shock", and is selected as one of the "Mercury Seven", a group of seven astronauts for the first manned space program of the USA.
On February 20, 1962, Glenn is launched into orbit in the Mercury capsule, christened "Friendship 7." He became the first U.S. citizen to orbit the Earth three times. He thus achieves the long-awaited success for the United States in the space race, and is celebrated as a national hero with a ticker tape parade in New York City.
In 1964, he retires from space travel, working among other things as a consultant to NASA while pursuing his political ambitions. For almost a quarter of a century, the Democrat held the Senate seat in Ohio. In 1984 he briefly ran for the office of the president of the USA.
At 77, Glenn travelled to space once again as part of the Discovery mission to study the effects of weightlessness on older people, making him not only the oldest active astronaut, but also the one with the longest interval between two space flights. He died in his Columbus, Ohio at the age of 95.
