Valentina Tereshkova Turns 80 (* March 6, 1937)

Valentina Tereshkova came to fame in 1963, as the first woman to ever travel into outer space. The then 26-year old launched aboard the Vostok 6 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on June 16. After completing 48 orbits in three days she ejected from the capsule at 7 km altitude and descended by parachute, landing near Novosibirsk.

Upon her return the cosmonaut became a revered hero, showing once again that the USSR was leading the space race against the USA. After having already launched the first satellite, the first dog and the first human into the orbit the USSR was able to demonstrate the „equality of women under socialism“. Valentina Tereshkova fit quite the bill for this propaganda mission: She had started out as a seamstress at a garment factory, at the same time attended evening school to become a technician and she volunteered as secretary at the local communist youth league Komsomol. The young woman, who had been dreaming about traveling to the stars since her childhood started skydiving in 1955. At the height of the space craze she applied at the space agency Glavcosmos and successfully completed the training. Khrushchev himself is said to have selected her for this honorable task.

In the months following her space flight „Chaika“ (English: seagull), her self chosen call sign, travelled the world as an aerospace heroine. Within the same year Tereshkova married fellow cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev. Their daughter Elena was born 1964. She eventually studied at Zhukovksi Air Force Engineering Academy and completed her PhD in aeronautic engineering in 1977. At the same time she took on three political offices. In 1966 she had become a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, three years later she joined the Central Committee of the Communist Party and in 1974 she was made a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, thus becoming part of the top level elite leadership. Tereshkova is still an active politician. The 80 year old, who is still held in high esteem by the Russian population, is a representative of Putin’s party „United Russia“ in the Duma of her local district. Still she dreams of outer space: She would love to travel to Mars and find out whether there has ever been life.
