30th Anniversary of the Death of Rudolf Nureyev († January 6, 1993)

Rudolf Nureyev was one of most the outstanding dancers of the second half of the 20th century and the first worldwide ballet pop star. Above all, he captivated audiences with his larger than life stage presence and sheer explosive energy. Born in 1938 on the Trans-Siberian Railway near Irkutsk, Nureyev grew up in modest circumstances in a village near Ufa. During a visit to the ballet he discovered his passion for dance as a child. Against his father's wishes he started taking lessons locally.

It was not until the age of 17 that he began a state education at the renowned Leningrad Vaganova Institute. In 1958, Nureyev was first cast as a soloist in the Kirov Ballet and within a very short time advanced to become one of the best-known ballerinos in the Soviet Union. Three years later, while visiting Paris for a guest performance, he pulled off a spectacular escape at the airport there.

The exceptional talent soon made his way into the western world of ballet and found a congenial partner in prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn, 19 years his senior. Nureyev not only danced with all the great classical ballet companies –the Royal Ballet in London, the Vienna State Opera Ballet or at La Scala in Milan –but also worked with modern dance companies such as that of Martha Graham. In the 1970s he also appeared in various films such as Ken Russell's "Valentino" and danced a duet with Miss Piggy in a guest appearance on The Muppet Show. In 1989 he toured through North America with the Broadway musical "The King and I".

Having already distinguished himself as a choreographer since the mid-1960s, the versatile artist served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet from 1983 to 1989. Despite his deteriorating health due to AIDS, he continued to work tirelessly and celebrated his last premiere in autumn 1992 with "La Bayadère". Only a few months later, on 6 January 1993, Nureyev died in Paris at the age of 54.
