40. Todestag von Rudi Dutschke († 24. Dezember 1979)

Weihnachten 1979 stirbt der Wortführer der deutschen Studentenbewegung Rudi Dutschke an den Spätfolgen eines Attentats. Elf Jahre zuvor, am Gründonnerstag 1968, hatte der rechtsextreme Hilfsarbeiter Josef Bachmann vor der Geschäftsstelle des Sozialistischen Deutschen Studentenbundes in Berlin „aus politischen Gründen“ drei Schüsse auf den „deutschen Che Guevara“ abgegeben und ihn lebensgefährlich verletzt. Infolge des Mordanschlags kommt es an den Osterfeiertagen zu den schwersten Unruhen in der Geschichte der noch jungen Bundesrepublik. Die Wut der Demonstranten richtet sich vor allem gegen die Springer-Presse, die eine regelrechte Hetzkampagne gegen den von ihr als "Kommunistenschwein" denunzierten Chef der Außerparlamentarischen Opposition geführt hatte und daher der eigentlichen Schuld an der Tat bezichtigt wird.

Währenddessen wird Rudi Dutschke im Krankenhaus notoperiert und überlebt nur knapp. Aufgrund der schweren Kopfverletzungen muss sich der einst so begnadete Redner Sprache und Gedächtnis mühsam wieder aneignen. Nach Ende der Behandlungen verlässt er mit seiner Frau Gretchen und den gemeinsamen Kindern die Bundesrepublik, er will Abstand gewinnen. Die Familie geht zunächst nach Italien, flieht vor den allgegenwärtigen Paparazzi aber einige Monate später nach London und findet nach der Ausweisung aus Großbritannien wegen angeblicher „subversiver Tätigkeit“ schließlich Exil in Dänemark. Ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre wird er wieder zunehmend politisch in Deutschland aktiv und engagiert sich bei den Grünen. Wiederholt reist der gebürtige Brandenburger auch in die DDR und nimmt dort Kontakt zu den Dissidenten Wolf Biermann und Robert Havemann auf.

Im Alter von nur 39 Jahren ertrinkt Rudi Dutschke in seinem Haus in Aarhus infolge eines verletzungsbedingten epileptischen Anfalls in der Badewanne. Anfang Januar 1980 wird er feierlich in Berlin beigesetzt. Tausende Gäste begleiten den Trauerzug.
