OSRAM Works celebrate 100 Years in Berlin (July 1, 1919)
Since the early 20th century the name OSRAM has been synonymous for light and illumination. The German Gasglühlicht-Anstalt, AEG and Siemens & Halske join together to found the company on July 1, 1919. They decided to merge their incandescent light bulb business activities in order to keep up with the competition in the ongoing electrification process. The brand name OSRAM is derived from the materials that were used to make the filaments at the time—first Osmium and later Wolfram. It was registered with the patent office in 1906. The famous orange-white logo is also made around this time.
The parent plant is located in the “Lampenstadt” (“lamp city”) near the Berlin Oberbaum Bridge. Soon, additional manufacturing plants spring up in other districts of Berlin and in Weisswasser in Saxony. Within two decades OSRAM grows into one of the biggest manufacturers worldwide, with subsidiaries in Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and other places.
After the end of World War II the company is partially expropriated and dismantled. The operating sections located in the Soviet occupation zone are merged into the NARVA combine in the 1960s, together with other lighting manufacturers. The OSRAM corporate headquarters move to West Berlin, in 1954 a second headquarter opens in Munich. In the 1970s Siemens purchases the shares from all co-owners and becomes the sole associate.
The product line changes over time, from the classic light bulb to fluorescent tubes, halogen bulbs, energy saving bulbs and LED lamps. Today OSRAM also manufactures lights for screens and office machines as well as lighting technology for major events and cars.
