Gerhart Hauptmann’s 160th Birthday (* 15.11.1862)
Gerhart Hauptmann was one of the most important German playwrights on the threshold of the 20th century and one of the most important representatives of naturalism.
Born in Obersalzbrunn (now Szczawno-Zdrój) in Silesia on November 15, 1962, the son of an innkeeper first tried his hand at sculpture before turning to literature. After writing the novellas "Bahnwärter Thiel" and "Fasching", Hauptmann became famous overnight at the age of 27, thanks to the scandalous premiere of his first drama "Vor Sonnenaufgang" (Before Sunrise). In the following years he wrote important plays such as "Einsame Menschen" (Lonely People), "Der Biberpelz" (The Beaver Coat), "Fuhrmann Henschel" (Drayman Henschel) and "Rose Bernd". The highlight of his dramatic work, however, is the play "Die Weber" ("The Weavers"), which premiered in 1892. The play is about the Silesian weavers' uprising of 1844 and its social criticism caused a furore in the empire. 1911 saw the publication of "Die Ratten" (The Rats), a late naturalistic work and one of his most important contributions to the modern world theatre. Having already been awarded the Grillparzer Prize several times for his previous work, Hauptmann received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912.
After the end of World War I, he became an advocate of the Weimar Republic and advanced to become one of its most important literary representatives. Many intellectuals were disappointed in Hauptmann, as he remained in Germany after the National Socialists seized power while also refraining from making political statements. A large part of his works continued to be published, performed or filmed. During World War II, he wrote his late work, the "Atreus" tetralogy, which is interpreted as a portrait of the National Socialist era.
Hauptmann died on June 6, 1946, at his home in Agnieszków (present day Jagniatków) and was buried at Hiddensee. In addition to more than 40 dramas, he left behind five novels and eleven stories, several verse epics and numerous poems, as well as autobiographical writings, speeches and essays.
