100. Gründungsjahr des Kameraherstellers Rollei (1. Februar 1920)

Der Name Rollei hat in der Welt der Fotografie bis heute einen magischen Klang. Die von dem Unternehmen hergestellte Rolleiflex-Kamera genießt regelrechten Kultstatus.

Sie geht zurück auf den genialen Konstrukteur Reinhold Heidecke. Um seine Vision eines neuartigen Fotoapparates für den aufkommenden Rollfilm zu verwirklichen, gründet er mit dem Kaufmann Paul Franke 1920 die Werkstatt für Feinmechanik und Optik, Franke & Heidecke. Von einem ihrer frühestens Produkte, dem Rolleidoscop, der ersten Rollfilmkamera für stereoskopische Bilder, leitet sich der spätere Firmen- und Markenname „Rollei“ ab.

Acht Jahre nach der Gründung wird Heideckes und Frankes Traum endlich Wirklichkeit: Mit der Rolleiflex bringen sie die erste zweiäugige Spiegelreflex-Kamera für Rollfilm mit einem Bildformat von 6 x 6 Zentimetern auf den Markt. Da die mit zwei übereinander liegenden Objektiven ausgestattete Kamera nicht nur außergewöhnlich kompakt und robust ist, sondern auch eine hervorragende Bildqualität liefert, findet sie bei professionellen Fotografen und Fotojournalisten schnell großen Anklang.

In den nächsten Jahren entwickelt die Firma weitere Modelle wie die preisgünstigere Rolleicord und arbeitet unermüdlich an der Verbesserung der Rolleiflex. In den 1950ern erlebt die Kamera schließlich ihre goldene Ära, durch mangelnde Konkurrenz, aber auch die Entwicklung neuer Ausrüstungsgegenstände wie Tele- und Weitwinkelobjektiven sowie eines Unterwassergehäuses.

Nach dem Tod Heideckes 1960 – Franke war bereits 10 Jahre zuvor verstorben – erfährt Rollei durch eine massive Erweiterung des Sortiments eine komplette Neuausrichtung, kann allerdings ausschließlich mit der nur zigarettenschachtelgroßen Kleinbildkamera Rollei 35 noch einmal einen Achtungserfolg erzielen. Es folgen turbulente Zeiten mit wechselnden Geschäftsführern und Besitzern, der Eröffnung und Schließung verschiedener Produktionsstandorte, Insolvenzen und Ausgliederungen sowie die Veräußerung von Marken- und Lizenzrechten. Heute werden unter dem Label Rollei vor allem Kamera- und Foto-Zubehörartikel, aber auch Action- und Dashcams vertrieben.
