100 Years of Bauhaus (April 1919)
Bauhaus is one of the best-known and most efficacious art schools in the world, even today. Despite its short-lived existence of barely fourteen years it has fundamentally altered creative and artistic thinking and doing. Founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in April 1919, Bauhaus had the idea to unite the creative disciplines into a new architecture, to merge craft and fine arts, and at the same time to pursue completely new interdisciplinary educational concepts. The teachers hired by Gropius are eminent artists, such as Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky—turning Bauhaus into a stomping ground for the international avant-garde.
Politically induced financial problems force Bauhaus to leave its Weimar home six years after its founding. The school relocates to the up and coming industrial city of Dessau. New possibilities of industrial manufacturing take the spotlight under the motto “art and technology—a new unity” and it is here that a majority of the now iconic objects, products and buildings come into being. In 1928 Gropius hands over the leadership of the school to a new director. Hannes Meyer redirects the focus on the social aspect, represented by the slogan “the needs of the people instead of the need of luxury”. With the help of cost-efficient industrial mass production good and functional design is supposed to become affordable for the broad population. However, in times of political radicalization the staunch Marxist Meyer loses his job after only two years. His successor Mies van der Rohe depoliticises the situation by focusing on the purely aesthetic aspects and architectural design. Nonetheless, the Dessau Bauhaus has to close its doors in the fall of 1932. Van der Rohe tries to continue the institution as a private school in Berlin but is forced to give it up for good one year later. With many students emigrating and international students returning home Bauhaus ideas are spread throughout the world.
In 1960 the Bauhaus archive started building a collection to revere the most distinguished school for architecture, design and art in the 20th century. In 1968 it contributes significantly to the internationally celebrated exhibit „50 years of Bauhaus“ and receives its own museum building in Berlin in the 1970s, designed by none other than Gropius. In celebration of Bauhaus’ 100th anniversary new exhibition buildings are set to open up in Weimar as well as in Dessau.
