40th Anniversary of Golda Meir’s Death († December 8, 1978)

40 years after her death Golda Meir is considered one of the most significant as well as one of the most controversial figures in the history of Israel. Some consider her the charismatic and determined leader of the Zionist state, the caring mother of the nation, always striving for peace, cooperation and social justice. Others claim that her black and white thinking, her intransigency and her tough attitude towards the Arab neighbours has fuelled the violence in the Middle East and poisoned the relationship with the neighbours until today.

Born in 1898 as the daughter of a carpenter in the Belarusian town of Pinsk, her family flees from pogroms and poverty to the USA. Here she joins the socialist-Zionist youth movement. In 1921 she and her husband emigrate to Palestine. After spending two years in a Kibbutz and giving birth to her two children she joins the Israeli Workers’ organization Histradut and the labour party Mapai. She quickly moves up to management level and in 1946 she also starts managing the political department of the Jewish Agency. After the end of World War II Golda Meir begins to focus her work on the founding of a Jewish state. Following the UN resolution to separate Palestine, and in consideration of the resistance that was to be expected from the neighbouring Arab states she starts raising funds in the US for the paramilitary Haganah organization and holds secret negotiation talks with the Jordanian King Abdullah. On May 14, 1948 she is one of the signatories of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. During the war that would follow she is sent to Moscow as a plenipotentiary. One year later she is elected into the Knesset. First as labour minister (1949-1956), then as foreign minister (1956-1965). Under Ben Gurion her reputation is that of being the “only real man” in his cabinet.

At the age of 70 she finally becomes premier minister. It is in this function that she welcomes Willy Brandt as the first German Chancellor to Israel in 1973. They talk about a possible mediation in the middle-east conflict. An initially successful surprise attack by Egypt and Syria a few months later brings young Israel to the brink of collapse. Faced with massive criticism regarding her failings prior to the Yom-Kippur-War Golda Meir steps down from the office of premier minister. She dies in Jerusalem at the age of 80.
