50th Anniversary of Konrad Adenauer’s Death († April 19, 1967)

No other politician left his mark on the German postwar  era like Konrad Adenauer. The staunch catholic was one of the co-founders of the CDU. As the president of the Parliamentary Council he contributed to the creation of the German Grundgesetz (Engl. Basic Law) for what was then thought to be a temporarily envisaged German West-state.  After winning the election and becoming the first chancellor of the newly founded Federal Republic of Germany he was a strong advocate of German sovereignty and its integration with the west. He was committed to the reconciliation with France and making reparations to the Jewish people, and he vehemently supported a foreign policy that furthered the isolation of East Germany.

During his legendary visit to Moscow in 1955 Adenauer achieved the return of the final prisoners of war from the Soviet Union and despite his pronounced anti-communism he began diplomatic relations with the USSR. During his chancellorship the “social market economy” was instituted, he and the Minister of Economics Ludwig Erhard became synonymous with the German “Wirtschaftswunder “(Engl. Economic miracle). An era came to an end when the 87-year old stepped down from his office in October of 1963, after the Berlin crisis and the building of the Wall had put him in a real predicament.

Adenauer died four years later in his home in Rhöndorf. Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Frings held the requiem at Cologne Cathedral. A state funeral was held on April 25 at the forest cemetery in Rhöndorf, with numerous heads of state and foreign secretaries in attendance. A state ceremony was held at the plenary hall of the Bundestag on the same day.
