Helmut Kohl’s 5th Anniversary of Death († June 16, 2017)
Having shaped the fate of the German Christian Democrats like no other, he will always be remembered as the "Chancellor of Unity" and a pioneer of European unification - Helmut Kohl.
Born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein on April 3, 1930, as the third child of a tax official and a housewife, Kohl joined the CDU while still in high school and became a founding member of the Junge Union (youth division of the CDU). At Heidelberg University he studied history, law and political science and received a PhD in history in 1958. After he completed his studies he worked as an advisor to the Association of the Chemical Industry for eleven years. In addition he was a member of the Ludwigshafen City Council and the youngest member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament before was elected Minister President of Rhineland-Palatine in 1969.
Kohl became chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU in 1966. Seven years later he took over the party's federal chairmanship, a post he would hold for a quarter of a century. In 1976, he was elected to the Bundestag in Bonn, where he was the leader of opposition as chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. In 1982 Kohl was elected Chancellor of Germany through a constructive vote of no confidence against his predecessor Helmut Schmidt. Kohl went on to govern the Republic for 16 years. After losing the election to the Social Democrat Gerhard Schröder, he retired from politics.
One of the greatest achievements of his term in office was the German reunification, which he promoted with his unilateral "Ten-Point Program" and skilful negotiations with the victorious powers of the World War II. Another political zenith was the founding of the European Union and the introduction of a common currency. Since the 1980s he had been particularly committed to the reconciliation with France. However, his political career was overshadowed by the donations affair that was uncovered in 1999, which put a heavy burden on him and his party and led to a falling out with long-time companions.
Helmut Kohl died at his home in Ludwigshafen on June 16, 2017, at the age of 87. He was the first person in the history of its existence to be honoured with an act of mourning by the European Union.
