75. Geburtstag Sabine Bergmann-Pohl (* 20.04.1946)

Sie ist das letzte Staatsoberhaupt der untergehenden DDR: die Ärztin Sabine Bergmann-Pohl.

Nach Facharztprüfung und Promotion wird ihr im Alter von nur 34 Jahren zunächst die Leitung einer Poliklinik für Lungenkrankheiten und Tuberkulose in Berlin-Friedrichshain übertragen. Um eine Mitgliedschaft in der SED zu vermeiden, tritt sie in die CDU, eine der Blockparteien der DDR, ein. 1985 wird sie dann Direktorin der Ost-Berliner Bezirksstelle für Lungenkrankheiten und Tuberkulose und beginnt sich stärker politisch zu engagieren. Zwei Jahre später übernimmt sie den Vorsitz des Aktivs für Gesundheits- und Sozialwesen des Bezirksverbandes Berlin und ist damit auch im Bezirksvorstand. Während der friedlichen Revolution sitzt sie als Stellvertreterin für den Gesundheitsbereich am Zentralen Runden Tisch.

Weil sie ihren Beruf nicht aufgeben will, entscheidet sich die politische Quereinsteigerin nur zögerlich für eine Kandidatur bei den ersten freien Volkskammerwahlen am 18. März 1990. Nach dem so überraschenden wie überwältigenden Sieg des konservativen Wahlbündnisses Allianz für Deutschland, wird sie am 5. April zur Präsidentin der Volkskammer gewählt. Weil noch am selben Tag der Staatsrat der DDR abgeschafft wird, fällt ihr außerdem die Rolle als Staatsoberhaupt zu. Im folgenden halben Jahr werden unter ihrer Leitung über 150 Gesetze verabschiedet. Sie ist es auch, die in den frühen Morgenstunden des 23. August den Beschluss der Volkskammer über den Beitritt der DDR zur Bundesrepublik verliest und am 2. Oktober die letzte Sitzung der Volkskammer eröffnet.

Im Kabinett Kohl erhält Bergmann-Pohl für ein Jahr den Posten einer Bundesministerin für besondere Aufgaben und dient danach als parlamentarische Staatssekretärin im Gesundheitsministerium. 2002 scheidet sie freiwillig aus dem Bundestag aus und fungiert zehn Jahre lang als Präsidentin des Berliner Roten Kreuzes. 2012 wird sie zur Stadtältesten Berlin ernannt und hat bis heute verschiedene Ehrenämter inne.
