The Band „Die Prinzen“ at 30 Years (1991)
Die Prinzen are the trailblazers for German a capella pop music and one of the most successful German bands.
Originally called Die Herzbuben the band had formed in 1987 in Leipzig. They changed their name after German reunification since there was another band with the same name in Wildeck.
Annette Humpe, singer of Ideal and Ich+Ich, produced their first album. It shoots to the Top 10 in 1991 and remains in the charts for an incredible 78 weeks.
In the 1990s they attain cult status with hits like Gabi und Klaus, Millionär, Küssen Verboten, Alles nur Geklaut and Du Musst ein Schwein Sein.
Their success is driven by catchy melodies, humoristic ironic song lyrics and superbly arranged songs, but also perfect vocals in 5 parts, accompanied by nothing but percussion and bass.
Die Prinzen received their training at the renowned St. Thomas Choir Leipzig and the Dresden Kreuzchoir. In their 30-year band career the Prinzen have recorded a dozen studio albums and three live albums. They have sold more than 6 million albums, which went gold 14 times and platinum all of 6 times.
Die Prinzen also endorse social and political causes: by campaigning against racism and rightwing violence, by donating money to the tumour center in Dessau and to a foundation for seriously ill children, by playing at numerous benefit shows and by supporting a number of local projects. They received many awards, among them the award „Against Forgetting—For Democracy.“
Their 2020 tour was postponed by a year. In the meantime the Prinzen have been working on new songs.
