100th Birthday of Artur Fischer, Inventor of the Split-Wall-Plug (* December 31, 1919)
Artur Fischer is a prime example of a Swabian entrepreneur, who remains down-to-earth despite being one of the most creative innovators in the world. His more than 1,100 patents and utility models saved countless every day problems. Without them today’s DIY-culture would not exist.
Born in Tumlingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg Artur Fischer loved to tinker since he was a child. His mother, who came from a family of technicians and engineers, supported his aptitude and also got him the Maerklin metal construction set that was on top of his wish list. After graduating from high school he completes an apprenticeship with a locksmith and works as an airplane mechanic during World War II.
Fischer returns to Germany in 1946 after being taken as a POW. At first he works in a repair shop. Two years later he opens a workshop under his own name in Horschweiler in Waldach valley and comes up with his first inventions. Owing to a general lack of matches he tries to create an electric lighter. Soon he makes his big breakthrough with the construction of a synchronized flash light for photography. He sells it to the company Agfa which sells millions of it.
Fischer’s name becomes known all over the world thanks to his most successful invention, the plastic split-wall-plug, which he patented in 1958. 15 million of these wall plugs are produced every day, even today. In memory of his childhood he develops a construction set for children in 1964, together with the company fischertechnik. Surprisingly enough the set becomes a bestseller. In 1980 he transfers the management of Fischerwerke to his son Klaus, but continues to go to the office until a high age and invents useful things.
Artur Fischer dies on January 27, 2016 in his birthplace of Tumlingen.
