175th anniversary of the founding of Carl Zeiss Jena (November 19, 1846)

The world-renowned optics group ZEISS, celebrates its 175th anniversary on November 19.

It was on this day in 1846, that company founder Carl Zeiss received the license for his newly opened workshop for optical and precision instruments in Jena.

Soon he began to specialize in the manufacturing of microscopes, which he wanted to develop further with the help of scientific research. And so in 1866, he began collaboration with the physicist Ernst Abbe, who created the first theoretical foundations of microscopy and became a partner in 1876. In order to improve their apparatus by using new optics made of special optical glass, Zeiss and Abbe brought the chemist Otto Schott to Thuringia in the 1880s and set up a glass technology laboratory with him, which later became the Jena glassworks Schott & Genossen. Thanks to this constellation novel and high-quality products emerged, ensuring the rapid growth of the company that soon had its own plant.

Demand for Zeiss products soon exceeded the regional market, and thus branches were opened around the world from the end of the 19th century. However, they had to be closed again at the start of the First World War. After the Zeiss Company shifted its focus to the manufacturing of optical devices for military use during the war years, it succeeded in returning to the world markets during the Weimar Republic. During the Nazi period, the company was increasingly restricted to a national market, and production of precision instruments for the military once again became a priority.

After the end of World War II, Zeiss was re-established in Oberkochen, Württemberg, by personnel deported by the US Americans. After being dismantled by the USSR, the plant in Jena is literally rebuilt from scratch by the remaining "Zeissians", nationalized in 1948 and transformed into one of the largest combines in the GDR. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the two companies, which had previously engaged in fierce disputes over trademarks, were reunited in a difficult process and transformed into a globally operating stock corporation in 2004. The owner of today's holding company - as well as Schott AG - is the Carl Zeiss Foundation, which had been set up by Ernst Abbe after Zeiss' death.
